I installed a tri spark ignition today and static timed it using a degree wheel. The engine is on the bench and not connected to the battery or coils so I did not check it using the led light per the instructions Later I was thinking that perhaps I could do this by connecting the power lead to the negative side of a 12v battery and the ground to the positive side and adjust the plate while the engine is at 28 btdc. Can this be done or do the coils need to be wired in as shown in the instructions schematic?

Just wait till its ready to fire up in the bike, static timing is pretty close and designed to start the bike up before doing the final adjustments, you will have to time it and adjust carbies when its ready to roll.
