Hey all,
Was just catching up on some forum reading, as I've been away.......
Magnetic oil filters....Other classic bikes.
Mikegray told us that he uses a large magnet on the outside of the Oil filter to collect debris.
Sounds like a good idea.
Would it be too simple to place a decent magnet inside the oil tank, that was easily removeable
for cleaning, and replace ?
What do you think...
AC.

Afternoon Aussie C

I have about 10,000klms since rebuild. After run in, never had a speck of metal on the mag sump plug. Wrapped a powerfull flexible magnet around the filter for 2000klms. Cut the filter open and found no "Fur" where the magnet was. I guess if your having a failure magnets can give you a sign (when the broken conrod dislodges the magnet). When I was working on Boeings, we used to send "MagPlug" samples for analysis. They could tell precisely where the metal came from, down to the individual bearing. You could set up a Norton profile that told youy where the metal was coming from ie, camshaft, bearings etc.

Isnt unusual to find sump drain plugs with a pin magnet about 3/8 dia x 3/4 long fixed in a recess in the plug,
so sticks straight in .Ford  Gearboxes , from old 70s Capri's have a ' dougnut ' magnet about 1 1/2 dia x 1/4 thick
which usually have a garden of filings collectted on them .The magnets powerfull enough to throw in the bottom of a oil pan / sump . Even one stuck to the outside could collect it , but you wouldnt want to let the filings loose .

A cleaver way to add magnet is to slip a proper sized bar magnetic inside the oil filer hollow, but remember to pull out on renewals. I'm gonna dangle a ring magnet off dipstick to both see oil level better and collect the fresh ferric fillings form the engine before settles in tank. Of course this misses the other 1/3 or more of non-ferric dust.
