Hi All,
Has anyone successfully attached a Mikuni TM36-68 without having to modify the frame? I have purchased a single setup and did my research but can not get it to fit.

Are there different 2:1 manifolds available? the one pictured is the 36mm manifold.
Advice would be greatly appreciated at this stage along with pics.

yes, i have tried Jims set-up and 32mm Animals but went off it them for various reasons.

Hey Dkt,
Have you read Peters (pevisseriii) threads on the pumper Miks.
There's some imfo there re alternative manifolds.
AC.

HI AC,

i did have a look but can only find his haniwork with the 40mm pumper....................and oxy!!!

could you point me in the right direction?
Cheers

Applying a TM40-6, I modified the frame web to clear the way. Mine require a 3" across notch up to 1/4 inch below the large wiring grommet. Beleive you me, it was well worth it.
Here is my thread from not too long ago.

Please don't hack your frame like that!!! (What not to do...)

Dkt26,I kinda agree with this and do not mean to mislead you into something that you will be sorry for later even though it would seem that this is exactly what I did.

I did nothing to the manifold. There was talk of milling and perhaps angle modification but i felt that there just wasn't enough meat to go there. Mine is a M.A.P. from Rocky Point fwiw.
There is nothing special about my frame (powder coated or freshly painted) other than being straight. My bike is a total bitza and i am not shy about meddling with purity. I will say this about it, I looks fantastic and runs like a bat out of hell. I have a somewhat modified motor and it was well worth it to me to get the operation the way i like. This is basically what I feel i needed to do.

This is totally up to you and your comfort level. If you find that you need to backtrack, trade it for a TM34 which as many will attest to, will fit and run great but will not work with that manifold. (Mounting bolts on centers) The manifold that you have will also work for the VM36 which has also proven to be good but also require a 45 degree fitting coming out of the top for clearance.

Frame cutting or mod is not an option in this case as it is a matching no: 73 850.
It's an everyday rider of sorts (I live 2 miles from work) so I have swapped it with the mikuni dealer here for a vm36 with change.
Cheers for the advice. I'll fit the 36vm and hold out for some period Gardner carbs I think.

Excellent and wise choice.

For what it's worth My 72 had/has a Combat head and a Big Bore exhaust system.
Here is the jetting I had on my VM36.

6DH3 needle (this seems to be universal)
#159 Q2 to P8 needle jet. (This depends on how your particulear bike breathes.)
280 main jet (The main seems to be very flexible. I ran anything from a 240 to a 330. Economy vs performance.)
40 pilot jet (again relative to your particlar needs)

At the very least, these are good starting points.

I have an ss big bore system also(L&R high pipes from Viking) and I must say it make it gutless as. Botom end torque is comparable to my sons z50 monkey bike.
Do you put torque inserts in your big bore system? Ones like on the xs650 site (mikesxs).
I am really not happy with the clearances on mine as it glides past the engine so if you know of anyone who has a set of the ss style, could you please ask them to post a pic from the top view (sitting on the bike looking down)?
Also, cheers for the jetting info for the vm. Greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Dkt

My exhaust is supposedly a tuned length with an adapter plate at the rear mounts extending the cone about 4" back. I think some put on big bore exhausts willy nilly and expect instant performance and it just doesn't work that way. You need to either work with the baffling or the length. In my case it is the length and they are great. Although i bought the out of Mass., I believe they come from UK. Great fit and clearance being tucked well to the frame.

Good luck with those Gardners. Sounds challenging but sounds really fun.
