Greetings, this afternoon I decided to change the rear tire on my 73 850 Commando Roadster. When I took the wheel off, I noticed that there were some hard rubber aborbers inside the wheel. In inspecting these rubber absorders they are in need of replacing. What is the OEM name for these little hard rubbers?? and a good source to order them. Appreciate any assistance. semper fi devildog

Devildog,

As you know, Louis is hours from you by car or bike, which is not exactly a Saturday afternoon jaunt. Moreover, I doubt he would have drive cushions in stock; chances are you will have to order these parts. I've had good experiences with Rabers Parts Mart in San Jose, California -phone: 408.998.44995; they usually have everything you need for a Norton in stock.

One too many 9s in the phone numer to Rabers I listed previously; make that: 408.998.4495.

Also, British USA in Houston may have drive cushions in stock; their number is: 713.944.7951.

Thanks to All

Thanks to everyone, think I can order the part and get things back together. Just wont be a plug and play which is always fun when one takes things apart. Appreciate it. Jason, I actually bought one of my bikes from Luis-- have to put tires on that bugger also so hope I will learn the little tricks on the 850 prior. Have a good one all. Semper fi devildog

Black & Gold-- a few years back I was down in Toowamba visiting the Aussie Marines for two weeks. Had a great time-- massive headaches every morning however!!!

for whatever brainfreeze I had, I thought Black/Gold wrote the original post......devildog actually did and it looks like there are plenty of suppliers for ya.....good luck.

One More Tire Question

When I removed the tire and tube, there was a large piece of rubber directly across from the valve stem-- It looked like it didnt fit t hat well or maybe I hooked it with my tire tool. Anyway what is the purpose of this and is it needed??? for balance?? It is located directly opposite (180 Deg) across from the valve stem. If not needed one could fill in the hole quite easily. I have looked around and can find no mention of it. As always any info is appreciated. sf devildog

One more Tire Question

I should have explained more-- the piece I am refering to is the Security Bolt but cant find out its use?? again, any info will help. sf devildog

Thanks Mark

Appreciate. might bid as these just might fit a bit better than buying brand new ones from what is mentioned in some of the previous threads. THanks again, Mark, semper fi rod

Re: One More Tire Question

The rubber thing with threaded bolt you are referring to is the rimlock which is meant to keep the tire from migrating on the rim during hard acceleration and snapping off the valve stem. I don't think you need the rimlock for normal driving. Maybe if you want to accelerate like a maniac at the drag strip. I ditched mine and the bike runs fine with no noticeable movement of the air valve.

Hey Devil i got mine from Britishspares in New Zealnad but it looks like you have plenty of local suppliers. Yeah morning headaches is just something you get when u visit Austrlia. Haha

Cush Drive Rubbers

First Thanks to all who provided info. I received the rubbers and last night decided to put them in. I naturally had a negative thought based on what some reported as they are hard to get in. Fortunately mine were very easy and things slipped right in, no problems what so ever. Really surprised me. The only thing I could not get done was grease the wheel bearings as I didnt have a spanner tool to get either sets of the wheel bearings off. Guess I will need to purchase one or make one?? Anyone have any alternate solutions to getting the wheel bearings out without the spanner tools? Agains thanks for the info. semper fi devildog

First of all remember this bearing retainer is a LEFT hand thread. You could carefully tap the the notch of the retainer with a hammer and drift, and if you are lucky it will unscrew without gouging the metal, but I would take a piece of flat bar stock and drill two holes and insert some 1/4 inch bolts to use as a makeshift spanner.
