Tips for Travel ?

Hello Hendo,
another thing I suggest to carry with you on tour is a short strap with a fastener like you have it on rucksacks.
Reason: if the mainstand spring breaks you can secure the mainstand to the swingarm without worrying (ducktape or ziptie can break).
You can go on with your tour and loose no time at some annoying place for example without shadow, or when it rains etc. etc....- that strap holds and problem is fixed in a minute!
You can release and re-use the strap when you sit on the bike so you can use your mainstand almost normaly.
When you arrive at hotel, camping resort, apartement after the day trip. let bike cool down, take a shower, take a coffee or beer and replace the spring unhurriedly.
Take also a spring hook with you for this purpose.
For sure I am fully with Ludwig: check all your wires and electrics. when you got your electrics revised and you use a modern regulator.....take a spare one with you.
 
As I'm not overly proficient in tyre tube repairs ,does anyone have thoughts on carrying the pressurised sealant/repair and a spare tube to get to a workshop to have done by a so called expert ? or just use my AA membership :)
I carry a small bottle of Slime tyre sealant and a small 12v compressor for long trips, this would be my first go to for a quick roadside repair. The slime sealant does work well. The last time I did not have the Slime sealant with me, I spent a not very enjoyable 90 minutes on a service station forecourt changing the rear tyre on my Guzzi in the blazing sun ...... 😢
I have never really seen any of the aerosol sealants work successfully. (I also carry tyre levers & a tube)

I have had moderately good results with Slime type sealants. I would definitely recommend a bottle to be carried.
I see that there a small capsules of compressed gas available to refill tyres. It would probably be more compact than the compressor.
I have had no joy at all with the pressure pack cans of sealant such as Finileak (I think)

I'm going to sell the BMW and use it's CO2 emergency inflator kit , that it came with . 2 cartridges should deal with any flat , carrying a new Michelin tube in the side bag . No Slime .
 
I don't know if the CO2 cartridges are all the same size. Mine came with a tubeless repair kit. I found each was worth about 5psi on a 17" wheel × 150 width tyre. I carry 4 with me, to get me to a forecourt airline.

I have carried a compact bicycle type air pump for long trips on motorcycles. It is great for pressure top ups and would even handle a flat issue with effort. I use a floor standing air pump for all my bikes in the garage. No need for compressors or co2 cartridges.

Two co2 cannisters won't put very much P.S.I into the average size tyre.

Hmmm... In that case I'll look into buying one of these mini bicycle type air pumps . Same size and weight as 3 CO2 cartridges . More air pressures after pumping up too I would think .
 
I blew out a spark plug 100 miles from home. Found a hardware store, bought some aluminum foil and red Loctite. Put Loctite on the threads, wrapped the plug with the foil, put the plug back in and made it home with no problem. So now I carry a small square of foil & Loctite.

Also had a flat on a BMW 250 single (R27?) when I was 16 (mid 1960's) and tore out the valve stem (no rim locks). I was in front of a gas station that had tube patches etc. I cut a hole in an inner tube patch, pushed the valve stem through the patch, coated the patch with rubber cement, fished it inside the tube, put another patch on the outside of the tube. Put the tube and tire back on and rode home, now I carry a spare tube plus patch kits and a hand pump.

Usually what happens Is I don't end up using the tools, but they come in handy when others break down.
 
There is certainly plenty of great tips and good suggestions for reasons to carry the tools etc that have been suggested in all the posts , and It is certainly food for thought , drp mentioned something worth noting.... basically that if I take certain tools etc then hopefully ( as I'm heading to the national Norton rally there will be plenty of folks carrying a variety of tools etc that should cover alot of issues if they arise ........:)

Roadside desperation is inventive . If things don't work out there is always asking for help . I don't use a cell phone , but others do and readily offer help with theirs , I ask calmly and nicely . No center stand ,so someone will phone or even help lift the Norton up onto found box or wood chunks or whatever works there n' then to fix flat . CAA in wallet , only used it ever twice on the Big Money Wasted . Never on Norton .
