In my last post. "how bad can be sliders....
I suggest changing fork oil, often ...so how many on this forum do it?
There is loads of you guys with Nortons here , i am interested in who as changed their fork oil in the last 12 months. :?:
 
I have Sir and I'd only had the bike a few months!

But then again, I had the forks apart...

And it looked quite feasible to me that the oil (correction: emulsion) that came was quite probably the original 1974 Norton assembly line oil !!

because I bought and installed your terrific Fork cartridges, which required fluid change

With putting on less than 1000 miles a year and living in an arid climate I will probably change every two years.
 
I changed it when the bike was rebuilt about 2.5 years ago. Then just a couple weeks ago when I got a new slider with my new front brake setup, I changed it again. I use good old ATF in this bike and the '80 Goldwing.
 
Changed mine earlier this year while transposing the front brake (mk 3) to the other side . (only to return it to it's original side0

I use 20/50 in mine too, much better than the proprietary fork oil I used to use. (or the ATF which I also tried for a while some years ago)
 
Will also be switching front caliper in my MK3 to correct side.
Expect to also be changing the original fork fluid (if any) at that time.
Fork sliders still do go up and down, so I hope there is still some fluid in there.
 
I did mine 2 years ago when I fitted new seals. The buggers started leaking for the first time on the NZ rally, so now bike due for a REfit.
New cables,
new carb sliders [ rhs spit the side out 500 miles from home bit was still very rideable [ but only after fitting another spark plug.]

I do mine every 2 years without failure, some times a bit earlier, depends on how many miles I do in the year, its not such a hard job and don't know why poeple don't do it as part of nomal maintenance, same as changing the brake fluid, its something that poeple over look, but the front end will let you know when its time to change oil, thats if you know your bike well, keep the maintenance up and you will have trouble free ridding all year round as I have in the 40 years of ownership.

Once a year. Wash out the sliders fully. Used to use ATF Dexron II but lately fork oil.
I cannot really tell much of a difference.

I do it every spring.Keeps me busy and doesnt cost anything but a little time
 
Mine most likely has 1971 fluid in it. Just got the thing back on the road last year and will most likely flush it out this summer.
Still sorting things and am getting closer.
 
Yup ...I do mine once a year with the weight of oil you recommend with your kit John ( I think it's belray )... works great

Did mine when I installed your dampers John, the oil was black as. The forks were a bit stiff at first but have settled in nicely, will do another oil change when I do the forks on MK3 number 2. (Again with your dampers, BTW, how long before the new ones turn up?)

replaced both legs with Castrol 15wt just 2 weeks ago
replaced one leg at the International Rally at Montsauche in 2013 after a seal blew on the ride back from Beaune (pathetic attempt to keep up with Gary's F1)
replaced both before the rally after fitting John's conversion (happy customer)
couple of years before that after minor off-roading & breaking collar bone
can't remember the rest...
