im sorting out the next item for the 73 build. the amals were shot, so the PO included a mikuni 34mm vm kit in the sale. there is a cable attached to the VM carb but on assembly the inner cable is to long to fit the norton stock throttle grip and i can't get all the slack out before running out of adjustment. does a mikuni throttle use a longer free length ? and if so, where to get one.

the local shop want me to give them a bike make an model/yr to provide a throttle grip. not even sure where to start

As far as I can remember a mk 2 amal throttle cable will fit straight in the mikuni

The sheath length for a stock Amal installation may be the same length as a sheath for a Mikuni installation, but the Mikuni inner cable will be longer as it has to reach further inside the carb to be fixed to the slide; unless the cable intended for the Amal was built sloppy if will not fit a Mikuni installation.

Rocky Point Cycle has three throttle cable lengths to choose from for both Mk3 and Pre-Mk3 Mikuni installations; you will need the split casing that fits into the twist grip (pre Mk3) and provides an abutment for the cable; I have those as well if you have lost yours.

picture shows what i got.

i will check to see what rocky has

I bought mine from Colorado Norton Works. Matt sells the complete kit and he may have just the throttle assembly. Since it's a custom made throttle cable consider buying an extra one.

I bought my cable from RGM it fits the mikuni and the amal twist grip, don't forget to fit a mk 1 amal concentric throttle spring inside the mikuni one so the slide returns properly ,and don't expect much in the way of top end performance, cheers

If you are only using one carb, or two with a junction box, a quick-action throttle off a motocross bike is usually OK.
