I used smoothrite last week against most of the advice online and just thought people saying it didn't cover anymore or sprayed crap etc etc weren't taking enough care, but it doesn't cover and it does spray crap and it's like piss, you used to be able to spray it over your shoulder in the dark in the wind and still get a good finish 20 years ago! most paint is going this way to save the enviroment, but I think it's not helping coz we're just painting everything five times as often, bring back lead in paint I say!!

Out of intrest, how was the silver as a colour match?

Not really a colour 'match' issue cos I'm not matching it to owt!

Looks good though, basically looks like alloy. I did prefer the Smoothrite though, before it went yellow...!

In UK B&Q BBQ paint is made by rustoleum and is good for matt black. PJ1 has re-appeared on the market and is very good for a gloss finish. I used it in gloss black to cover silver powder coating that seemed to flake at the slightest provocation.

I personally think those 'heat blocking' paints are just more snake oil. How much heat can be blocked by a thin layer of anything except maybe ceramic tile and that still heats up, it's a matter of thermodynamics, it's got to go somewhere.

You may, or may not be right about the snake oil claims in theses off the shelf products.

Proper ceramic coating is also still only like a thick coat of paint, and the thermal barrier effect of that is pretty astonishing.

Would you leave your hand on a cylinder that's been coated in that stuff for any length of time after the engine has been warmed up? I sure wouldn't. But I'm not going to get excited about it.

But I don't think that's what it's designed for either!
