Hi gang,

I can't remember how to get TDC, and can't seem to find it in the shop manual anywhere.........and I know it's in there.
would one of you be so kind as to remind me how to get there.
I'm just about to pull the head off (thanks for the wrench size info by the way)

Easy way would be to pull the Plugs, use the kick start lever to get it approximately to TDC (by looking through the plug hole), put the bike into second gear, and then use the rear wheel to make small adjustments. You should not have to remove the head to see if it is TDC. There should also be a guage on the inside of the primary case over the alternator that should give you degrees from top dead center, if the writing has not worn off. Just remove the cap in the primary and you should be set. You line this up with the indicator mark on the alternator rotar.

If it's to facillitate the removal of the head, just take the spark plugs out and look down the spark plug holes. Put Norton on the centre stand and in top gear, turn the engine over by hand using the back wheel and look down the plug holes until the piston stops coming towards you. Then you'll be around top dead centre.

Hi, to get it positively exact you need a dial gauge with a spark plug hole adapter and an appropriate length probe. To get it close, after removing both plugs, just stick a screw driver into one of the plug holes and watch it rise to its highest as you turn the engine over using the rear wheel in fourth gear or using the kick starter.
