A couple things. Is this a proper contact angle between the tappet and the valve stem on the exhaust rockers? This is the right side. Both look about the same.

The left exhaust rocker was quite loose. The rest needed no or minor adjustments. Could the loose rocker have caused the left side to run cooler than the right?

NAUGHTY .

Should run across centre & back , so thrust averages down stem.Allowing for gas flow in port side thrust . :P

If the swines been resurfaced a few times , and pushrods no ' taken up ' ( Shortened ) it would contribute to the error .

ALSO the adjusters appear not to match .
 
Those angled contacts are more angled than the 3 heads I've run on my Combats. Maybe some valve stems are somewhat too long for the contact angle as adjuster seems pretty short beyond the rocker end.
 
There were reported problems on here with the hollow mushroom head adjusters that require an Allen wrench. The later ones are solid all the way through and use a straight screwdriver slot. Leo Goff recommends them. :)

I got mine from Walridge at Leo's request. Yes, I have the lock nut on it.

How do you fit or change these tappets? I assume you have to remove the rockers?
 
Getting back to the original issue, I brought mine into an acceptable position by having 30thou ground from the tip of the valve. The kibblewhite valves can have that amount but no more ground off them.

Yes, you have to remove the rockers to remove the tappets. The upside is that you don't get indentations on the top of the valve stem.

Agreed! Many have fiddled and farted to get these in in other ways but the right way and the no nonsence way is to pull the spindles and be done with it.

I had the old allen head years ago but they came with
valve head caps which were easily replaceable.
The slot head type is a bother for me. But it isnt
the end of the world. I can see that the mushroom
head might help some.
 
Yes hardened valve caps can allow as much off stem as needed to get best geometry and easy replaced caps. Mushrooms end advantage is more their less side load on stem than wear per say, though that's closely related. Often they come in lighter materials too. Lot of teeth gritting to suck out and replace some tight spindles for such small items, but can rev a bit higher longer I think. Lash caps do add a tad of mass though.
 
As I remember I think the intake side the mushrooms could be put on without any issues, but the exhaust the rocker shafts have to come out unless you happen to have the head off. There was a thread on this about 2 years ago when I did it. Yes, the old style tappets do wear a groove in the valve stems.

Here's my originals after 13K miles. Some of you have already seen this.
