Can anyone think of a tank off another bike that looks like a Roadster tank but is bigger?

Stuck a Fastback tank on mine when first had the bike. Needs an interstate seat with it though.

The John Player cafe racer models have a bigger roadster tank under that fiberglass cover, holds an extra gallon. Not that it helps, they are quite rare it seems. And need a shorter seat.

The problem is that the Commando tank has quite a large tunnel underneath, to clear the large top tube - quite unlike most bike tanks underneath.

Someone needs to make up a roadster type tank with more capacity !!!
Probably get it out to 4 gal before it looks too fat ?

That is a nice looking tank.
Ive thought about making a slimmed down alloy version of the 850mk3 Interstate tank. Werent there some on the late 750 Interstates that were even larger than the Mk3 Interstate? I saw one somewhere that looked over the top for size, might have been on an early 73.

If memory serves the steel Interstate on my MK 3 is 5.25 gallons or about 6 and a bit US gallons. The steel Interstates are very nice looking tanks for such a large capacity, however for my purposes a 4.5 US gallon tank would be plenty. I think a slimmer tank with the side profile of the Interstate would be a really nice shape, especially in alloy.
If I get some time to spare, might tackle it next winter.

I will sure second that.

I have absolutely no experience with tank fabrication. Is it really that hard to make a tank? What is involved to make a steel tank that drives even the overseas options up over $600 for a bare tank.

The problem in finding alternate tanks for the Commando is that big top tube. The Yamaha tank looks quite nice, but does it have a large enough centre cavity to fit over the Commando tube?
I had the same problem with my Egli project, the top tube is 4" in diameter, so the only option was custom, in this case homebrew custom.

was going by the looks ot the tank. Perhaps a new underside can be made or modifications by a crafted fabricator to work with a Commando frame. Easy to check old Yamaha liturature as to capacities.

6.34 gallons according to this page with stats:

even with a modded under side for the needed top tube clearance, there should be a helluva lot more capacity than a standard Roadster tank.

here's a vid of a cafe'd XS850 where you can clearly see the lines and shape of the tank:

I have asked the same question before and am actually amazed that with all the talent on this forum, nobody has come up with a good replacement that is readily available. There may be too many purists here. I was carrying around the required tank measurements but do not frequent motorcycle salvage yards. My instincts tell me there has to be one out there that will fit with minor modifications. Until one shows up I just run my old fiberglass one and won't worry until it springs a leak. I have never coated it or messed with it. I am in the process of getting a few cans of av gas to try. More so though in the Triumph as it has 10.75 or 11to 1 compression.

I am guessing that the o.p. probably would like a tank that fits, but it was posed as what tank "looks like". Probably many out there that might fit, but not look like.

I am also guessing that the two are mutually exclusive and that some sort of modifications would be neededd to make a finding of one, conform to the requirements of the other.

There is a bike pictured on this forum that has an oversized roadster tank. I have unsuccessfully tried to search it; my recollection is that the owner is American, and the tank aluminium and the bike very good looking. I recall the poster stating the name of the tank's maker. If it is your maybe you can direct us to the post

Sounds like a JPN one ?

That would be a nice idea wouldn't it, then they could all complain that the seams arn't the same size as the originals, the shapes all wrong, the decals don't fit prope..........

Andover recently mentioned it is aiming for 100% spares availability. I figure
Ill just wait until they get the tank thing sorted. Yes, it will cost more than
gold bars but it will be new, done properly. Sign me up for one of each,
roadster and interstate.
