Tank Pad

I have a tank pad that I got from Old Britts. It's nice but it compresses too much. I've had to shore it up with some stuff to get any clearance with the oil tank. Maybe it works better with the stock tanks?





Harbor Freight has some pads for standing on. They were on sale so I picked some up. About $8. I've cut a few out and I'll see if this material works better.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Cut up and layered inner tube? I used that for a while but I didn't make it long enough, so the sides were still hitting on the tube.

You might try to find some foam pipe insulation of suitable size? I used that with a stock Roadster tank for a few years. No noticeable signs of deterioration when checked and replaced with the "official" pad.

I made mine from an old, fairly thick wetsuit that was too small for anyone in the family. Three years and still perfect.

Now who's got an old wet suit laying about? Maybe one of the Canooks here? I bet they use an old hockey stick or puck somehow. Of course Dave could find an opportune piece off a kayak.

I'm willing to send some old musty wetsuit cuttings to anyone who wants some....in fact, my wife would really love it if I got rid of my stash :lol:

Or in my case the back out of a soft leather shoe, adds to the 'patina'!!!

What do you guys recommend for the installation of the tank pads? Do you use some sort of adhesive and glue it to the tank? -Or do you recommend zip tying the pads to the frame?

depending on if its a roadster tank or an Interstate tank---the front pads are the same----the rear pads are different. Roadster tanks use a thinner pad--the I/S tank uses a thicker pad. I use 3M adhesive---super weatherstrip type. spread on the pad and on the tank after cleaning well with contact cleaner---let get tacky real well before attaching----I use a piece of duct tape to keep it tight over night or longer---works well for me. Another good glue is the type that appliance parts stores use to glue on the roller bands to clothes driers---expensive stuff but sticks like h**L.
