Anyone know of someone who can clean out a roadster tank in San Diego? Old flaking Kreem liner and light rust. Would prefer not to damage paint. Thanks!!

Look up radiator repair shops, they have washing tanks that will take the tank back to bare steel inside and outside.

You can dump a few cups of miscellaneous small nuts and bolts into your tank and wrap it in blankets and duct tape and put in a clothes dryer

Years ago, my Vincent suffered the same fate with an old Kreem liner. It flaked off with the new California gas at the time. Advice at the time was to soak the inside of the tank with Acetone, which I did, and it removed most of the old Kreem. I too used smallish nuts of various sizes inside the tank, as xbacksideslider suggested, in a clothes dryer (heat off) but with the dryer packed tightly with sleeping bags. The tank then wrapped securely and centered in the sleeping bags. The tank was set to roll end-over-end and later re-positioned to a side roll.

Old, junk cap and junk taps were used to seal up the tank. It worked well.

Sheetrock screws work great for tank internal cleaning - shaken, not stirred! Never thought of the dryer trick but certainly should work well!

Depends on exactly what you have in your petrol tank, however there is one thing almost any tank has and that is rust. This can be removed using the the Sacrificial Anode method, see below;

Use Electrolysis to clean your motorcycle gas tank;

Kommando - does that dryer solution work (assume on Air dry)? Because if it does I am all over it!

I have not done it but I have a tumble dryer marked for future use as its prone to setting alight and burning houses down. I plan to disconnect the heating elements and the blower motor leaving just the drum motor working. Then you line the dryer drum with thick foam, wrap the tank in a duvet after inserting nut bolts and dry wall screws and insert into lined drum. UK dryers would struggle to contain an Interstate tank but most others would fit.

I have tried the electrolysis, it worked and gave you a rust free tank I found but was very messy.

You could always use a local laundrymat .... much larger internal basket and let’s face it, no one paying much attention to what you put in as long as you have coins , eh , specially if tank wrapped up well in comforter etc. .... I really like the dryer idea , still glad I’m not facing that particular job just now

I once got caught in titanic downpour of rain - all the curbs were underwater. Got completely soaked. Pulled off road. Then rain quit. Happened to have stppped in front of a laundromat. Went in there stripped down to my underwear, threw my clothes into a dryer, and sat there while the ladies in there gave me some weird looks.

Think of all the cr*p that you prevented from getting to the float bowls !

Where you doing an advert for Levi jeans?

I would crap myself at the thought of putting a Vincent tank in the dryer.

Agreed--but it's only a gas tank...;)

I won't mention using the gas grill to heat the heads and barrels when installing the sleeves (liners), lower valve guides and lock rings! :eek:

Soda crystals electrolysis worked for me, anode removed every other day and cleaned. Flushed, dried thoroughly then POR 15. Job done.

So far- I put a gallon of MEK in the tank and let it sit for a few days making sure to swish it around frequently and alternate positions of the tank so the MEK could do its thing everywhere on the inside. It's incredible how it liquefied the old KREEM liner. I have spent the last 4 days doing electrolysis to get lingering rust. I'm shocked at how well that works. I've done about 8 sessions of at least 6-10 hours or more. But, even though I'm not seeing any rust left in the visible part of the tank, the sacrificial anode still pulls a lot of rust.

I'm curious how long it has taken others to do the electrolysis? Will the anode eventually remain clean? This morning I put a gallon of Evaporust in the tank to see if that improves. I do see little flecks of KREEM that obviously the MEK didn't get. But like I said, I really don't see any visible rust.

I did mine for approx 3 weeks but I will stand corrected as I think you can keep drawing out ferrite until there is nothing left. Rinsed out thoroughly, etched and made sure it was bone dry, then treated with whatever your sealant preference is. I have, as I stated had no issues with the POR15.

Thx! Wow- I think you’re correct it would continue to possibly draw ferrite. I rinsed my tank well, rinsed with rubbing alcohol, drained dried and topped it off with fuel. Will decide on to coat or not to coat once I get a few rides in!
