Well, my friend went and parted with 9k and bought a Norton/Velo, at a distant view it looks the business, New 600cc velo engine, Manx brakes fore/aft, new tank, seat etc,
yes ...she sure looks the dog's dangly bits!
Then we got a little closer, when the kickstart was operated the belt drifted of the clutch wheel! infact it settled about 1/2 hanging off the side!
The builder had used 1/4 alloy engine plates, that where bent..ie the engine ,gearbox where out of alignment. The engine was 1/2in off centre line.
So new 1/2 dural plate's where drawn and water jet cut, two weeks later and some mods the belt now runs true.
Next job the forks, WELL I HAVE SEEN SOME SHODDY WORK IN MY LIFE! but this attempt by the PO ...
Firstly the forks where siezed soild, no attempt to push them in and out would move them, this is what i found..
Right side assembly...after some considerable effort the stanchion was "slide hammered" out of the slider, the internal slider bore as deep gouges /heavy scorings down the length, approx 15-20 grooves with raised burs,
Having worked with FITFORX for a few months ,well i have seen this before, It's from someone using a steel bar placed thro the bottom damper hole, and hammered to remove a stuck bush, this method digs into the slider bore..hence the furrows!
Left side, just completly worn out, Moral of the story, all that glitter's aint gold :!:
Worn sliders are getting a problem,
I had a guy on the phone ,saying he had fitted my dampers but they did feel harsh, i recommend he sent the forks to me for checking...yes sure enough worn out :!:
I fitted them with my fork recon kit and returned them..he emailed me stateing the forks where now great!
Many posts on this forum relate to stiction...its excesive wear :!: Surely after 40 years what would you expect.
Next time you have yours apart, check the spring and see the flats worn on the coil sides..where do you think all that fine steel grinding paste went, nicely mixed with water :?:
