I need to paint my guages (housings) but the colour has faded, and I can't recall whether they are a gloss, semi gloss or even flat black. Can anyone tell me the original colour?

I will vote for a semi-gloss black. I have tried to remove the original coating and found a very tough resistant to solvents finish with a green primer beneath the black coat.

Bob,
If the green primer was fairly easy to remove, it's zinc chromate primer. Used as aircraft [aluminum] primer back in the day. If the primer is very tough, it's strontium chromate epoxy primer [modern mil-spec aircraft].
