I am starting to assemble the swinging arm on my MK11A. The bushes go through the bonded rubber/steel dust covers, thats fine but where do the large O rings fit? they are on the parts list and Norvil supplied them but there were none fitted when i took the existing arm apart.
There does not seem to be any obvious place where they locate, there is a recess in the dust cover but the O ring cross section is too big to fit this.

Jim,

If you have an 850 Mk2A it probably came with freeze plug type end caps. If you're looking in group 14 of the parts book, plate number 24 and 25 are shown which have a long thin bolt holding the end caps in place. These use outer o-ring p/n 060650. My Mk2A parts book doesn't show the freeze plug type caps, but I suspect they don't require the outer o-rings.

You should still have used the inner o-rings, p/n 060449.

Dave,
thanks for replying, the end blanking plugs are just that blank, no through bolt, so i will not use the outer O rings.

This all just started as an excercise to have the wheels rebuilt as alloys, then the swinging arm came out, then RGM had an offer on a set of close ratio gears, then i decided to fit Norvil isolastics, then i was looking at a frame with front forks and an engine so i decided to take it all off and have the frame powder coated. I got the cradles zinc plated, not the kind you would polish more just a protective plating and ive started to take all the paint of the tank etc to get it srayed a new colour.

Don't have a bike anymore just lots of bits scattered over my garage and office.

Swing Arm

Jim,

While you were working on the swing arm did you check for excessive spindle play at the fit inside the engine/gearbox plate? Even with new swing arm bushes this area will cause poor handling if not solid. This is really the weak point for the swing arm action.

You're address shows Glasgow...Scotland?

Amazing how these projects have a way of growing. Upon reassembly you'll find a few more parts that look a wee bit tired next to the new stuff, so the project grows.
Sounds like your doing it right though. :D

David,
i did check and the spindle is a good fit but i read something about different mods to lock the spindle so i tried to copy the description of one and made up two bronze eccentric rings, split them so each half bolts back together with 2 M6 cap screws then i tapped an M8 hole through the thick side for another cap screw. this will then clamp round the cradle and the M8 screws will go through 2 holes i drilled in the cradle and push the spindle hard against the back face.
As for the project growing i hope it doesnt grow any more, ive also got a belt drive to fit, already done the barrels and head, all thats left is the bottom end and the forks, already fitted an RGM front disc and Magura master cylinder. Ive also made a one of aluminium rear number plate holder with extensions machined to accept LED indicators. Ive ripped off all the wiring and have all the wires and connectors ready to make my own harness when it all goes back together plus Boyer electronic ignition, digital coils and power box.

Happy assembling ahead and yes Glasgow Scotland. I think we all owe Jerry thanks for such a great site uniting Norton owners all over the globe.
