Can I ask, was the commando ever intended to have the final drive chain on the right rather that what we have now on the left????
The reason for asking, why is there a slot on the right hand leg for the brake back plate torque reaction arm and a hole forward of that for the brake cable post????

My thought is that they just didn't want to have to make and stock two different pattern plates, when they could use a single one for both sides.

Yep - Ken and jbruney got it. One less part number and no need for poka-yoke on assembly.

Gadge, I agree that poka-yoke and Norton are divergent. In spite of its many design virtues the Commando was not "Designed for Assembly".

The Commando was primarily designed to produce a plethora of owner/mechanic/trouble shooter/backyard machinist-designer/ all round fixer/patcher/sometimes rider foolhardy enough to endure a lifetime of continuous punishment and loving near every minute of it, and bragging to everyone willing to listen when he gets more than maybe15 trouble free miles a month on what he has convinced himself is the greatest bike ever to roll and strand his smiling ass in the middle of nowhere.

That is the reason everyone smiles at us when they see us riding my friends.... They know we teeter over the abyss of insanity...... I'm good with that.

Probably the same reason they all came with Interpol wiring included.

I was going to write a reply but jbruney said it better than I ever could.

I'll just add they weren't designed for ease of maintenance either!

The acronym RAMP hadn't been coined back in the day. The "M" reference is still evolving.

Best.
