Does anyone know if the plain plates in a Barnett clutch should have a shiny almost mirror finish or would they work better if given a matt or rough surface finish with emery? My clutch started slipping after applying ATF to try to resolve a screeching clutch problem, I have now degreased the friction plates but wondering if I should also roughen the shiny surface on the plain plates.

Roughing up your steel plates will only increase wear, bite will not increase. You need to find the root problem.

There was another thread about screamin Barnet clutches, it seems that is normal and eventually goes away. Check stack height to make sure the spring action is not wasted on extra space.

Glass beading the steel plates will dramatically increase the bite for a while anyway. However Barnett plates should not slip even with polished and lubed plates unless there is a problem.

If you are running a belt drive you probably need to relieve the top edges of the splines that engage the steel plates. Many times they are too high and will not allow the diaphragm spring to go concave enough to apply pressure to the plates. You can increase the stack height to fix it but you will then end up with a clutch that is harder to pull. I see this problem regularly with RGM clutch drums and occasionally with others also.

PS, my Barnett plates still screech occasionally with around 12,000 miles on them. A good helmet helps. Jim
