I want to replace the wimpy wire that holds the filter & flat washer in my sump filter with a internal snap ring. Do any of you guys that have done this remember what size I need to order?

Thanks but what I was trying to get was the size of a "real" snap ring to replace the silly wire. Part # NM 16948 (06.7679) often fails so from reading old posts I learned that a lot of folks solder it in place, but reading farther I found that some smart guys like Mr Jim Comstock Aja, commonz & some racers (KenC) use real snap rings. I found that a 1" x .042 works. I sanded mine down to be just a bit thinner because the stock wire is about .037 the new snap ring is so strong I really can't see it ever coming out on it's own. Now to drill for safety wire & I can go riding to the Dana Point concorse d' elegance Sunday to see some amazing cars & bikes!

I'd read those posts quite a while ago and last oil change took the circlip out for the 1st time (37 years), had never thought of doing anything with it before. Everything was clean and had no reason to take it apart. Put it back in and seemed very tight and secure. I probably won't look at it again for awhile since I usually don't take this out when I drain the sump. Seems like a sure leak path (minor) after crushing the gasket.
