Suggestions for helmet-cam?

Hello one and all,

Over the last year or so I've really enjoyed watching video posts where folk have recorded their various Norton voyages. Starting to think about getting a 'helmet cam' myself, but no idea what to look for. I guess there are loads of lousy ones around that don't walk above walking speed or just give you wind noise through the microphone. Any thoughts on what works and what doesn't?

e-bay keyfob cameras that cost more for postage than the actual camera, do a great job with (2) 20 minute clips to a 2GB memory chip.

I like the Go-Pro ones. I am sure you can find a used non-HD one out there cheap now that the HD versions are out. I have one of the Std versions and it has worked pretty good recording race videos from my Royal Enfield.

I'm going to mount key chain camera to view the various parts of bike under loads like rear tire patch and drive train or fork action. For helmet I will get the cheap $40 ish box camera the view screen swings out to place in view to aim head at stuff, mounted to R side of helmet so can work controls by throttle hand. Helmet help steady and also magnify suspension impacts. The hi end cameras are at risk to smash and don't do anything better than the cheap ones unless for concert hall audio or HD resolution for cinema screen size blow ups. Audio is the bugga boo for all these. I'm going to try to wind muffler mine to let the engine get threw more.

There were examples of the key chain in Other Motorcycle section, they go screwing a bit on rough stuff and fast view changes but acceptable quality audio and video. I want someone with a air plane mounted key chain to try and chase me on Peel thru the twisties if it can keep up.

I have shot plenty of video from my bike. After trying a few times with a camera on my helmet, I switched to a handlebar mount. Much better than on a helmet . You don't realize until after playing video from a helmet mounted camera just how much you move your head around - looking at the sky, turning sideways now and again, etc.

In my opinion a fixed mount (handlebar, etc) is much better.

My buddy impressed me a couple of weeks ago with the Go Pro, which 72Westie also mentioned in this thread. There cameras are relatively cheap and compact, and a SD card will hold hours of video. He has his mounted above his headlight (on a Beemer).

Vibration factor ?

I had one mounted on a steering damper on a 450 and you can see the forks, wheel, basically all the front end and the road ahead. 450's vibrate heaps and it was good till the forks look like spaghetti after the revs get up. On a Commando it is quite stable and the sound is ok but a bit high pitched. In Oz (pal) it takes 25 frames per second so it doesn't pick up too many vibrations.
