stuck lay bearing

I've been trying for two hours to remove the layshaft bearing from the gearbox shell. I've used enough heat to make Satan sweat. Any tips ??

How about a bearing slide hammer? You may not even have to buy one - places like Autozone will often let you use them free - you have to leave a deposit, but you get it back when you return the tool. - BrianK

Is the gearbox still in the frame? If it is out, heat in an oven (or I use my gas BBQ) for 30 minutes. Invert and bang against a block of wood. Should drop right out.

Check out a previous thread labeled "beraring in mind". Lots of discussion there about bearing removal and replacement, pros and cons of taking the gearbox out of the bike to work on it etc. Are you replacing with a roller bearing?

the gearbox is out of the bike. I guess i'll try the oven idea. THANKS for the help.

I found heating up to about 300F for 30-45 minutes was sufficient to get it out. I set the gearbox shell on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil to prevent oil from running onto the grates and onto my steaks!! Doing this outdoors is really superior. Using the oven in your house really smells up the house and is probably pretty toxic. Plus, your significant other may ban you to the workshop for life.

When you go to put the new bearing back in, put it in a freezer for a few hours. Then heat up the case in the same way and the bearing should drop right in without any banging on it at all.
