Stripped!

I'll put that drawing together when I've got a sec Steve.

On an ironic twist to the subject of this thread, I was checking the head nuts and bolts torque settings last night when I discovered Number 1 nut was stripped. This is for the stud at the center of the front of the head. I got the nut off and out, but it looks like the thread on the end of the stud is ruined. I presume this stud can be easily replaced if the head is off - can anyone advise please?

The number 1 head fastener should be a bolt and not a "nut and stud".

Thanks LAB. The legacy of the engine builder continues. Will it ever end. Wonder if I can get the stud out without taking the head off. Doubt it.

Whipped the head off after I got home tonight. Bad news. Well, maybe not as bad as it could have been.
No it's not a stud, it's a cut-down bolt. Here I've re-assembled it by pressing the nut back on the shaft end:

Here's the view from the end. You can see it's been ground and must have been welded:

So when I checked the torque the other day, the weld has reached its limit, popped off and then the nut's come loose.
Will have to look around and see who's got the proper bolt. Maybe "that shop in Elizabeth St, whose name must not be mentioned" might have one. That'd be a surprise.

I tapped my number one head fastener to 7/16-20 and use a socket headed cap screw (allen Bolt). Torqued to 35 and all others 20 and 30 respectively. FWIW Never have had issues with copper head gasket with proper procedures and due diligence.

Well maybe it is a problem with Triples but I gave up on Copper gaskets ~ I even surfaced the faces both on head and rocker boxes so they were 100% true and the &*&*& things still leaked ~ short of using gasket goo ~

I salute your diligence pvisseriii.
