Ok...
I'm convinced to abandon my quest to seal my fiberglass tank. Where is the place to buy a quality steel roadster tank?

I just ordered an aluminum tank from Waldridge. $395 CDN. I'll let you know how good it is once I receive it.

Well I'd certainly be interested in that...
I'll have to call them on Monday or tuesday.
Is is a roadster tank?

That's what I ordered, a Roadster tank. They said they are Canadian made, with a Monza cap, but slightly wavy on the sides. Probably not suitable for polishing. I plan on giving it a skim coat of putty, block it, then paint it. I'll post some pics once it arrives.

Is that this one?

06-2701A ROADSTER TANK - ALLOY $975.00 CAD

Cuz it's a bit more that you quoted, don't worry, we won't tell your wife that you told her it was only $395.

Nope. Like I said $395 Canadian. Here's the Pay Pal receipt. The shipping is $51.55 CDN

Jim, A small factoid I got from the guys at Dream Car Garage: spray bare metal with epoxy primer first, then filler, then sanding primer. They generally know what they're doing, eh? (They are from Canada).

Ya, that's standard for spot putty. Plastic filler (Bondo) needs bare metal. I understand some primers and plastic filler are now compatible, ie. prime, then mud. I had a body shop some thirty years ago, but it's been a long time since I've done any finish work. There's a little gal at my local auto paint store I get on with well. I'll get all the dope from her.

Thanks for the info.

Part number?

Dave,

If you're interested, call them. It's not in their catalog.

I was just interested in seeing what was the difference between the tank listed online and the less expensive one, if anyone knows. Not going to lose any sleep if I don't.

I wonder if there is a steady supply at that price. That is killer. It would effectively put a stop to the constant fiberglass tank dilemma.

The Burton Bike ones are OK, but the filler surround needs a LOT(not a little like they told me) of work to get a cap to fit, which is a pain if you buy a painted one. The paint finish is disappointing - the lining has two poor joins on the top. Mine arrived rusty but came with FREE Mombai sand inside - It is OK after a lot of work, but I wasn't thrilled with it at all.

Service wasn't great, told me I'd have to pay a penalty for sending it back - If I wasn't satisfied, but agreed on the phone that they can't actually do that. Worst bit was that we agreed they would fit the cap ( extra £45.00) to prove the fit - but of course they didn't and it didn't. Cap had no air hole in so bike broke down on first run - thanks lads.

On the positive side - fits well, doesn't leak, looks good, if you avoid close inspection of the paint, which of course all your friends immediately do!

I would definetly look for alternatives in the future. At half the price it would have been good, but a bit of a rip off at over £400.00 but hey that's the way it is these days, I suppose.

Hey Sorry you had a bad experience.
I got a bare Interstate tank and a small wrinkle aorund the slightly ofset cap filled with primer spray and a paint job was all that was needed.
The old cap of the feeked fibre glass tank went staight on.

Yippee 67 zillion times better than fanging it down the highway waiting for the 37 year old fibre glass tank to spring a leak and spray petrol over the engine or for the carswell to let go and the carb to fill up with gunk!

cheers
P/s...i don't work for Burton BB nor is it owned by my brother?

I live 24 hours flying from them on the other side of the world!

Baldrick,
I dont see a price listed at Burton, but I am betting it was more than 400 USD! One of the big complaints I have seen here regarding replacement tanks is the cost of them. It is probably going to be one of those things that seperates the enthusiasts from the addicts.

I've got friends who live over on Devonport Road. Are you familiar with any of the sailing crowd in your area?

Really? Are they really that expensive considering:

a) how much it costs for the tooling to make new ones
b) compared to the cost of tanks for other classic bikes
c) compared to what a used tank will cost
d) compared to the value of the bike (a refurbed Commando can fetch on average between $7-10k)

The fact that you can even buy a new tank is amazing. Just a few short years ago it was impossible to buy a new steel tank.

Try pricing some replacement fuel tanks for modern bikes. For example, a Ducati Sport Classic tank - $2200 for a plastic tank that warps with ethanol. That does include a paint job, but still...

Commando tanks seem like a bargain by comparison.

Yikes! And LOL!

Hey, I have said all along that I didn't think the new tanks were out of line...however, I continue to see posts that they are cost prohibitive, so you have to admit that a 400 dollar alloy tank, assuming it is not a piece of junk or a fluke will put a lot of that to rest. If there is a steady supply at that price, I was serious when I said we should all buy one.

Oops...I guess it was in a private message that I said that and not in the thread, but regardless....it is a killer price.

FWIW-there are three left and when they are gone, they are gone

Hey Baldrick

No problem, sounded a bit of a rant now I've re-read it,. it's still worth people considering, just thought I'd let people know there's work to be done if you buy one - which is not what they told me. At the end of the day tank is fitted and looks just fine- just a shame you have to rust proof and 'fit' the cap - most 'new' things don't need repairing, but I'm getting used to this classic parts thing now. If you look at the photo you'll see how much the cap doesn't fit. It is in part the cap as well. The non locking being a slightly better fit. I take it yours wasn't rusty inside at all?

Hey Russ cost of a painted one is £ 350.00. This is the basic cost before tax, which works out at about $550.00 Delivery is obviously extra - that will be a few dollars more I'm sure.
