I believe the Knucklehead was their first production ohv engine. Back in the day they said "Don't f__k with the Knuck"
I'd take one too if I could afford one.
I have never seen a Knucklehead, however when I was a kid I had two WD Indian Scouts and my mate had two WLA Harleys. He knew somebody who owned a Knucklehead. There are probably a couple somewhere in Australia. What interested me is that the last motor Harley and Davidson ever designed was the Knucklehead. I think the best Harley motor ever was the XR750 TT and that had a timing side bearing problem which was later fixed in the Sportster engines. However I don't think any of the late Sportster motors have decent ratios in their gearboxes. And that tends to stymie their use when trying to build a bike that is exciting.
When I was building the Seeley, I looked at a 500cc DOHC Jawa Speedway engine and also considered a Harley Sportster engine. The Jawa would have been ineligible for any interesting historic race class, and the Harley was all too difficult.
