I did a quick search on "50", "50-Wt", "Oil" "50&Wt&Oil", etc, and got deluged with everything from toasters to tires ...so I'll just ask:
With warm weather here is there any reason not to replace last year's winter-put-away oil w/ straight 50-Wt Valvoline/ZR1 ?
(e.g., lower flow to the heads until oil is hot, etc, etc, etc)

Woudn't touch the stuff myself, far too thick. Causes far too much pressure & drag on your motor.
I use 10-40 all year round, runs lovely & free.
SAE 5 is good enough for white metal bearings (at least, that is what I read in some proffesional book once).
Others may dissagree, but may the debate (oil & tyres etc.) rage on.

I put some in. No leaks from the engine, instead it leaked from the gearbox!

Didn't stop wetsumping over the winter, but I doubt much would. I'll know more in a couple weeks when I pull it off the bench again.

Oh Boy!!! An oil thread....

All I can say is that I have run Valvoline 50 wt oil in my Combat for 33 years....both in Pennsylvanie (temperate climate) and Florida (sub-tropical climate). I'm not going to expound on this, but those with questiions regarding long-term use of 50 wt oil might want to PM GrandPaul and ask him what he found when he opened my engine up during the bike's restoratiion. Hint: very, very little $$ towards the engine.

I too will soon be heading to the local "Autozone" store to pick up a few quarts of Valvoline 50 weight oil. It was always my understanding that a heavy monograde oil (40 in the cool, 50 during the hot) was the standard recommendation for Norton Commandos. Although, I must confess to using 15w40 Shell Rotella (diesel rated oil) in the past. Doesn't seem to make any difference, motor runs and the wheels go round
