Sprage Clutch

I did a search on sprage clutch and found some older posts. Some folks bought spray clutches from ALIEXPRESS. I think they had 18 dog-bones. Anyone have a long term use report? Are they still available from that supplier?

Well...
I might have been the first here to try an Ali-express sprag. This was a few years ago when the CNW uprated components were not yet available.
I stuck the $17 Ali sprag into somewhat worn inner and outer original parts and it worked like a hot damn.
Still does.
Several others have done the same since. From time to time I pose the question " Has anyone had their Ali Express Sprague fail?"
Last I checked the answer was no.
Even so, if your budget is adequate, the CNW parts are your best bet as this gives you an upgrade on all of the wear points in that Sprague drive.

AN no longer sell the 14 roller sprags now, so it's either full set replacement or the Ali route, I believe.
I had a hardened surface put on my OE set up, so I'll be going Ali when/if the need arises..
 
Using the search feature I found my original post on the Ali-express sprag. It was installed in October 2017. I kept a tally of the starts up until 200 then stopped counting. It must be around the 350 starts level now.

Great stuff Glen, you changed my mind. I am very happy with mine now finally. It’s been a few years, never fails.
 
Thanks for the reply. The one I am installing I got from a recommendation here on AN. The original lasted 46k miles. The second one just about 36K miles. I ordered an ALI EXpresss one to bring with me as a spare. $26.00 with shipping.

Well, it has been a few years but I think it came from an AN member who had a bunch of them to sell, possibly MADASS?. I also put in a new primary chain drive sprocket. It has some visible scoring from use but it was still working. Even with brakes in the "cage". it was still working. This one replaced the one that was in there from the factory, more bones than the original sprag and the cage was solid, no splits. Next month, a new wiring harness. Can't wait to ride up NH Rt. 153, lunch at Moat Mountain Smoke House. Next up past Mt. Washington on NH Rt 302, Crawford Notch, Franconia Notch, east across the Kancamagus Highway then back South.

Love that area. I used to camp, ski and hike up there while growing up in MA. Hope the weather is warmer than now.

I had dealings with China from two suppliers. Bought 4 from 1 and just ended up sending £92 to the second one and said give what this will pay for ! I'd bought 2 genuine ones from Andover after replacing the starter drive sprocket to make sure all was well. Both disintegrated within 2 to 3 starts!! Very expensive. So then , the first order of 4 were not a direct fit without a bit of machining. The second order arrived. 8 of them !!! My friend has a machining business and skimmed a few thou of the drive sprocket as it was avery tight fit. Success so far. Still got a box of them. I have some of the e-mails with contacts with the company's and the paypal receipt for the 8 in the second lot if anyone is interested. Has saved me a fortune and it now actually works !! Roy.

Also there is a page with the sizes. DC4127 3C is the code.

Google Ali Express DC 4127 3C . $ 18.97 CDN .. I ordered 2 on the recommendation of Worntorn 2 years ago . Works perfect and i have a new spare 👍

I also have the DC 4127 3C Chinese sprag, working for about 60 starts by now, i had rebuild the complete set 3 times previus the installation of the Chinese unit with few starts before breakage each time, i am so happy that i have installed a Dinodave starter to make the bike ES only.

The Chinese unit works, i can't prove it but i belive is a slighter biguer unit and this might be the reason why it lasts.
