I've seen a small number of Commandos with the speedometer on the right and tachometer on the left. The 1974 Commando 850 I recently purchased also has this "backwards" arrangement. Is there a logical explain action as to why someone would mount these instruments in reverse?

No good reason but tradition, toss of coin or the way it seemed best to route cables at the time. I did Peel both ways ok as long as cable mostly enter straight into clocks. Would be a fun double taker conversation feature at rallys.

Triumphs of the same period had the speedo on the right, and tacho. on the left. Triumphs being somewhat more plentiful than Nortons could lead an owner into believing that the speedo on the right side was the norm for all British bikes, or owners may be more used to riding Triumphs so just got used to the speedo being on the right and swapped them over?

Does it realy matter anyway, I have always kept mine the way it came out of the factory, but I changed the whole bike in the early 80s so makes no diffrents to me, it realy the up to the person that owns the bike, tradistionalies might disagree, each one to their own.

The speedo cable is on the left and the tach cable is on the right so....

You must be thinking of the 850 MkIII, because it's on the right on earlier models.

Perhaps they did that one year and called it a NEW model :D

I put speedo on right, tach on left, because the cables better fit that way.

I ran them reversed for years until someone mentioned it at a rally so had to search out my old sales brochure to confirm then move 'em back into place just to keep future rally purists happy. :D
