the only trouble I have seen with the 3 phase spark's is some rotors were not machined properly so it would NOT fit on the crank shaft.

I realize this is a blatant thread hijack, but what kind of experience have people had with the Sparx 3-phase alternator?

Sparx ELs have a warantee that is as good as no warantee, their reputation for quality defines the bottom of the barrel. The first and second month in business and I had to replace 3 system boxes out of my own pocket; I refuse to stock them now, and yet their 3 phase high output alternators fly off my shelves and I never hear from them again; maybe the Chinese will get the ELs right, yet. GP I think you may be lucky...

May be; JRC treats me very well as a reseller. The failures I had with Chip's unit were handled immediately at zero cost to me, not even postage.

Generally good experiences. Some of the rotors needed to be reamed to fit but that seems to have been fixed. I have also seen some regulator failures but I suspect that may be heat related from mounting in a sheltered place. Jim

I was tempting towards the Pazon, but I need to get new 6V coils with it. I was hoping to keep the 'original' look to the coils. Another $100 is a big bite, but maybe not in the long run. I know there are 6V coils out there from Taiwan for $30, but maybe not worth it. I'll have to see where the Pazon Lucas look-alikes are made and if they still have the 7 year warranty. Thanks, for the hints, all.Dave69S

Dave,

On the subject of 6V coils, about two months ago I experiemented on both ends of the product spectrum on several bikes using both Boyer and Pazon. The coils are: PVL (Germany) and Wat Yong (Taiwan). PVL is about twice the price of Wat Yong. In swapping coils between two 850 Commandos, a 750 and a Bonnie 650 I noticed no difference in starting, idle or running. On a 850 I spent most of one day swapping between Pazon and Boyer and measuring current and spark output, visually in a dark workshop kicking the bike over. No difference, both brands put out a nice spark.

I finally decided to leave the Wat Yongs in place on my rebuilt 850 as I could see no reason to go the minor effort of refitting the PVL's. Since then I have done a couple of '000kms and have had no issues whatsoever. I have retired 3 sets of old Boyers and decided to only go with Pazon for these reasons - Quality, Performance,Value and Support.

Mick,
That's good to know. The Pazon 6V coils are about $100 for both. Don't know who makes them, they have their sticker on them in the picture. I may just buy the Emgo (Taiwan) coils locally (Brit Bike or DomiRacer), they are fairly cheap and get the Pazon EI, but it's only saving me maybe $40. That may give me the biggest bang for the buck. Norvil has not responded about their Wassall EI, and his coils are fairly expensive too, plus shipping from UK. At least Pazon has free shipping and they seem to have good reviews at least here, it does look better made in the pictures compared to the Sparx, plus the info on the Sparx is pretty minimal.

I wasn't expecting this thread to go on so long and be so informative. Thanks to all. Eventually I'll be thinking about the 3 phase alternator too. It takes at least 3K on the tach to start charging on my old system with nothing on.

The 3 phase Sparx stator is worth extra idle time and brighter light at lower rpm and ain't much to go wrong nor under much stress. Source other brands for rotor and rect/reg.

If you have a worn AAU and its running nice right now, about the last thing you want to do is dial it in so both contact breakers give the same timing spark. I have had two frustrating if informative lesions on this in two Combats. Its the sloppy spread of each jug firing with time plate adjusted to best compromise thats giving you some grace. Basically aim em so one hits right for staring and the other for WOT. Neither will be best it can be but pretty darn good enough to enjoy w/o a bother.

Reading the scope of non-Boyer EI for the bux, I got Pazion SureFire on the way from MAP.
