Sparx wiring trouble

I've been trying to finish up wiring a new alternator and regulator/rectifier. My issue at this point is that I have a short somewhere, as I have blown a couple of fuses. I moved the ground wire to a better spot and now the fuse won't blow, but it immediately gets hot.

The regulator is not laid out exactly like they show in the directions and it's illustrated with a negative earth, while I'm still running positive ground. What I did was connect the three yellow wires to the alternator and tapped the hot red wire to the brown/blue wire which is fused and runs directly to the negative battery terminal. Is that correct? I completely bypassed the wiring harness and everything else. The black ground wire is now on the z-plate.

I haven't disconnected the zener, rectifier, or capacitor. Could that be a source of my trouble?

My electrical abilities are very limited. You'll have to dumb it down for me, I'm afraid.
 
the brown/blue wire should have the black from the regulator connect to it. the zener and old rectifier HAVE TO BE DISCONNECTED. the red wire on the new regulator goes to batt positive.
I hope that you have not hurt the new regulator.
 
wires/fuses getting hot? are connections tight? what gauge wire are you using (too small)?
 
All seems to be well now. I'm using 14 gauge wire. The regulator appears to have 12 gauge and the alternator 14. I rewired it as Bill said and it does not appear to have damaged the regulator, thankfully. I will say the directions leave a lot to be desired and while I searched through past forum posts trying to find a definitive set of installation instructions, I didn't find any.

The system appears to be charging now and my turn signals now actually work without having to be at 4-5000 rpms.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the SPARX 3 with a Boyer? I'm wiring my '70 commando from scratch. I'm by no means an electrical expert. In fact I have no idea what I'm doing, but I am following the wires carefully, labeling and replacing one by one. I'm looking for some clarity on wiring the boyer and the sparx with a hand made harness from scratch. Any help would be very much appreciated as I'd like to get on the road as soon as possible!

Just to clarify, I take it you mean you are fitting a Sparx three-phase alternator (rotor and stator) along with a Sparx voltage control box, and a Boyer electronic ignition? And not that you are fitting a Sparx three-phase alternator (rotor and stator) to a Boyer three-phase voltage control box (Boyer Power Box)?

If the first one is right, then both systems can be dealt with separately.

For the Boyer ignition, the fitting instructions for connecting the wiring should be fairly straightforward, if you are wiring positive earth/ground, then the important part is to connect the White Boyer box wire to the (negative) ignition circuit wire from the ignition switch and kill switch/button, and the Red box wire to (positive) earth/ground so that it has an electrical path back to the battery positive terminal. Also make sure you have a good ground wire connection between the engine (cylinder head?) and the frame and/or battery positive terminal. If you have chosen to wire the bike up as negative earth/ground then the Boyer Red wire goes to ignition and White to earth.

For the Sparx three phase alternator, connect any alternator stator output wire to any Sparx control box Yellow wire, then for positive earth, the Black wire should be connected into the wire running between battery negative and the ignition switch, and the Red box wire to earth. For negative earth, the Red and Black wires are swapped over. 5,000 Ohm (5kOhm) resistor caps must be used with the Sparx alternator kits and must also be used with the Boyer digital version (Micro-Digital & Micro-Power) ignitions. http://www.britcycle.com/Manuals/332105AinstU.pdf
