I know someone will be along shortly to say they’ve fitted a million and never had an issue.
But, speaking personally, I don’t care for the quality of Sparx kit.
I didn’t like the way you had to broach the alternator rotor on to the crankshaft. Had I not spent a couple of hours reaming the hole and carefully filing the slot for the woodruff key, it would never of came off again!!!
When I fitted the stator, I wasn’t happy with the lack of clearance between rotor and stator. It should be snug in there, but the Sparx touched in two places. I gently ‘polished’ these areas up with a dremel.
I also didn’t like the quality of the cable and insulation used on the stator. These wires get a hard life, and my stator wires felt hard and brittle when the unit was brand new and still in the box. They didn’t make me feel confident about the longevity I could expect.
I found the three phase rectifier/regulator that came with the Sparx unit was getting way hotter than the other units I have played with (now Shindengen is the only unit I will fit or recommend to anyone) To be fair, it looks like Sparx have recently changed to a heavier, cast aluminium heat sink, so this may no longer be an issue.
It was for these reasons that I took the Sparx units off the Dommie and my project bike. And instead fitted the new, current generation Lucas units. I find the quality good, and fit and finish excellent.
My only complaint on the Lucas is that I’d like to see longer wires on the stator.
