I have a spare 850 frame with ANG yokes. I bought it because someone convinced me the steering angle was better than the 750 frames.

There is no title otherwise I'd keep it and build another bike. What are my options for getting a title if I were to build a new bike, or am I better off selling it and buying a builder with a title?

Depends on how you look at it .
You could get a Maney Moter & Quaife box , Cerani suspension & new sheetmetal .

Though I saw a good 73 750 go for 860 bucks not long ago . though not everyone
would say it was ' GOOD ' , but for a clubmans it wouldabeen .

Hobbs Choice . Dont Panic . The project might need a Frame .

Hi elefantrider:

All bikes and cars that are bought outside of the state of Ca. or those that have their registration expired must undergo a vin verification. A running bike can be ridden to the DMV and have the DMV do the verification. Non-running bikes that must be trailered or trucked must go to the CHP for verification because the DMV won't climb into your trailer or truck bed to check the numbers. (I was there yesterday for 2 1/2 hours and recommend making an appointment.) It isn't necessary to have a title for a frame (a bill of sale is a good idea though). But! It would be prudent and wise to check to see if the frame has been stolen before you put any time or money into it. Take the frame to the nearest CHP office (appointment required) and have them run the numbers, if it's "clean" start your re-build and when you're finished have another vin check completed with engine #'s and frame #'s in the appropriate boxes on the vin verification form. I much prefer the CHP, as there is no fee for the verification (I was there yesterday also) and the CHP officers are much smarter than your average DMV employee. I swear, there must be a rule at the DMV that a prospective employee can't apply unless they've fail the pre-employment test for McDonald's.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, but more info has come to mind.

It's the Department of Motor Vehicles, not the Department of Motorcycle parts. You can't register a "box" of parts, nor can you register a frame or motor. You must present a (more or less) complete "vehicle" to register it. It doesn't need to run, nor does it matter if the electrics work, etc. A title shows a registered owner and is nearly useless if it hasn't been registered for over 7 years. The "Bill of Sale" is more important to the DMV so that they'll know how much sales tax to charge you.

You can register anything without a title in Ca., if you do a VIN Verification first. In your case, where you're building a bike from parts, you should take the motor and frame and trans too if it has different #'s than the motor and have them checked at the CHP to see if they are stolen. If they are clean you should get some paperwork for it. Then build your bike. Go to the CHP again with a bill of sale for the frame, motor, and trans. If you don't have any, fake it. You bought these parts at a swap-meet. All of the other parts were bought new at a Ca. retailer, so you have already paid Ca. sales tax on those items, so you should only have to pay taxes on the purchase price of the motor, frame and trans. Bring a handful of receipts to document this. Again, do this at the CHP. When you're finished there, then you go to the DMV, and the only paperwork you need to show them is the VIn verification form from the CHP. It will have the purchase price of the vehicle on it.

Easy!

Thanks. Seems not totally hopeless. This frame doesn't have a VIN or data plate but I do have a receipt. I wasn't thinking about building a new bike when I bought it, was just planning to swap out frames. So I am not sure what I would number I could put on the data plate if I got one.
