spacer behind clutch drum

During assembly I noticed that the mainshaft circlip is about 1/10 " past the end of the sleeve gear shaft, so when the dish in the spacer is fitted over the circlip it is still about that distance away. Is this normal and doesn't it mean that when the clutch nut is tightened all the force is against the circlip?

And remember that the book is wrong; it should be torqued to only 40 ft/lbs!

Where does the 40 lbft (please note correct use of units!!) figure come from? Before getting the correct torque wrench I was using 50 lbft with Loctite 638 and the nuts regularly loosened, especially after prolonged high speed touring. I now use 70 lbft as per the book, new circlip and nut each rebuild and no problems.

You must have stumbled into some GOOD circlips, consensus is they fold over before 70. 40 is (I beleive) an arbitrary figure based on many people's trial and error.
