Sometime in the 80s I went to Darley Moor to watch the racing.
There was a crowd in the paddock gathered around a van and awning. I got close enough to see a bike with Norton on the tank and assumed it was some idiot / hero (delete as appropriate) trying to prove that Brit hand grenades can still cut it with the Gixers et al (there were still a few die hards back then).
Got closer and... WTF…
It was a rotary, in a Spondon chassis with (IIRC) a pre unit Triumph gearbox. It was the ‘factory’ with their first ever outing of the rotary racers.
Like many, I went on to follow them over the next few years, a truly fabulous and emotive sight and sound, especially in the black and gold JPS years in a sea of rainbow coloured Japanese bikes n riders.
Them were t’ days.
