some suggestion for you Throttle Position Sensor

He can also go to Jenvey and buy the TPS . Its is marked CTS but says is a Magneti Marelli in the photo . It lists for 46 pounds , contact via email and be sure its for the Norton 961.

Hello Richard, we've got a 2013 961 with persistant start-up and idling issues, and we are proceeding to change as many sensors as we can get our hands on (after having read that virtually every sensor on these bikes is unreliable).
We replaced the Head Temp sensor, camshaft position sensor, and crank position sensors with Bosch units so far, and we ordered the Harley Davidson 27629-01A Throttle Position Sensor as recommended in this thread. However, it seems that the HD sensor spins in the opposite direction of the CTS unit fitted on the bike, so the bike idles super rough and instantly dies when you hit the throttle. As soon as we reinstalled the original CTS unit, it ran fine. We couldn't figure out why at first but then noticed that the two sensors spin in opposite directions (although the two parts look identical). The HD part was brand-new and sealed in the original box, just picked it up from the local HD dealer in town today.
Everyone in this thread seems to agree that the Harley part 27629-01A is a direct replacement, so we're super confused. Your original post was from 2018, so I'm wondering if anything has changed since.
Thanks very much for your time!
**Also, are you in Southern Ontario or Colorado? We're in Montreal!
Yes , I just verified that the TPS on my HD turns CCW with the throttle. And of course it turns CW on the Norton 961 .

There were dodgy batches in 2018 also. Mine was changed by Stuart Bodycote for a second hand yamaha one. Starts better than ever now. I think the unit was slowly breaking down until it stopped after 2/12 years.

Thank you all for your help so far. The Harley Davidson part# 27629-01A is stamped as Magneti Marelli PF1C/00 (Anti-Clockwise) and it looks as though what I actually need is the PF2C/00 which spins Clockwise. I did some research and found a cross-reference number that should work, Facet 10.5001, which I ordered and should receive next Wednesday.

As for the calibration of the TPS, what would be the correct routine? To I absolutely need an OBD Lead and SXCar software for this calibration, or is there a manual sequence I can perform to calibrate it?

If it were me , I would get the OBD2 lead and converter box from SCS Delta , then download their free software . Because , I don't see a way to do it manually ? Lets say your 0% throttle position is 1.01 V and your 100 % throttle is 4.87V , when read with a DVM . What do you do with that information ? You have to let the ECU know to change it. And I don't know a way of telling it how to set the new value without the software/interface/laptop . The chances are your values will be so close that you won't see a problem .
The other very worthwhile reason is with the cable/laptop and software you can do so much more like check the status of your neutral/side stand/tip over switches and the air box and head temp sensors. If you are keeping the bike it is a good investment !
I am assuming that you have a SCS ecu , because this won't work with OMEX .

Hi Everyone
I have just purchased the HD TPS 27629-01A thinking it was correct. Before I stumbled on this thread.
At the beginning of the thread, members have made eluded to this specific HD part number to be correct.
But then , it seems it may be the WRONG part/part number.
Can anyone confirm 100% that it is either right or wrong?
If I dont open the package , I may be able to return it( probably not but maybe)
Thanks!

You need a CW TPS

I have an Omex ECU, so can I swap the TPS without checking exact voltage at closed throttle??

Unless you know the recalibration routine then its best to keep the exact voltage at a closed throttle. On my Honda CRV rather than go though recalibration, as its a long routine, I measured the voltage on the old one and then adjusted the new TPS to the exact same reading. The old one was randomly spiking causing engine stalls.

Is it possible to amend/update the “ Alternate Parts” list on the HD part number?

Here is the link to the Jenvey TPS PF2C by Marelli marked CTS for Norton 961 Price is now 49 pounds . This is the one you need :

I have removed Harley-Davidson 27629-01 from the alternate parts thread, and asked Jerry to remove it from the resources page.

Dears Commando 961 owners I would share an interesting experience I got with mine SE.
Thinking about the irregularity of engine operation I felt that some responsability could be on TPS side, given the sensation that often the bikes seems not knowing exactly and with the required accuracy the throttle position (for instance when you approach a curve with closed throttle). Thus I decided to replace it with an identic common spare part for automotive fitting more Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Citroen and so on. Manufacturer is Facet code 10.5001. Well...engine behaviour was really stabilized and significantly improved with a very low cost.

Second suggestion: if you experienced engine switch on difficulties, like myself:mad::mad::mad:,I suggest to follow the procedure: switch on key start, have a full opening and full closing of the throttle in order to teach:D the ECU concerning the TPS full excursion and only then act the ignition on pushing (with closed throttle). With this procedure my SE starts always properly now.

I have had this twice now revving at 2/5-3 thousand rpm not very good one a bike with only 260 miles and trying to run her in first time throttle cables where to tight done that next ride was ok . Today went out again going into a spare bend and it would not shut of revving it’s head of only just made the corner thank god I ride mx bikes got bike home left it half an hour all back to normal but don’t trust it one bit chain guard fell of last week just a bit pis-ed off all this on a new bike it’s not on phone them tomorrow see what bull they say

Sorry to hear about the problems.
The high rev-ing issue has been experienced before by owners, and broken chain guards too, unfortunately.
Just have to get after Norton to make it right!

Are you having this trouble with a new Birmingham Norton 961 ?
