Have smokey left cylinder, particularly when on the side stand, which makes sense after noting the intake valve oil drains through the head from the rh side.

The compressions are good, both 152 PSI ( 10.5:1 ), the LH spark plug is a little dirty.

So it has to be the LH intake guide/valve, when fitted they felt nice, no excess play, so I must have popped the guide seal / rubber boot off the guide when fitting the springs and collets.

Any suggestions ?.

Was thinking of running the engine to get it hot, puting at TDC, pumping a couple of PSI of air into the cylinder to hold the valve up, remove the rocker, tapping the valve collets out with a hammer and checking.

Any suggestions on how to compress the springs to put the collets back in ?.

Hi Josh,
What you are suggesting can probably be done, but I don't think a couple PSI is going to hold the valve up while you try to compress the valve spring. I suggest threading a few feet of clean clothesline rope into the spark plug hole and the bring the piston up against it, that should give you something more solid to push down against. You will have to compress the valve spring to get the keepers out and then again to get them back in. Hopefully you can enlist the help of a friend (the big hulking kind) to stand over the bike with a large screw driver in each hand. Tell him to use the screwdrivers to push down the valve while you pull the keepers out with a magnet.

Someone posted either here or on the other forum about a valve spring compressor tool that he made for this job. It might have been "ludwig", I don't remember now. I think it bolted up to the frame or the rocker cover threads in some manner. You'll have to be creative.

A goon holding two screwdrivers sounds scary. I would suggest wearing safety goggles and buying some extra collets!

Tried the "not removing the head method", to say I failed would be an under statement.

Decided to man up and pull the head off, the rubber boot was infact off the guide, replaced the boot and took it for a ride, problem solved, thanks gents.

I'm aware of 4 cases of this in the last few months, all recently rebuilt heads, 2 of them were mine!! I checked the seal with a "genuine" from Andover, there does appear to be a slight difference with the thickness of the rubber on the pattern ones, my own fault for using "other" suppliers. A well known dealer based in the English midlands suggested to one of the guys that he superglue the seal on....I kid you not!

Ford Coswoth, will adapt [ machining the top dia] and never come off...they have steel bodie's around the rubber, the plain rubber one's swell with oil and heat ,become loose and slide up the valve guide. I think cheap ones are oil resistant to a degree.
