The smiths electronic tacho just failed on my MK3 after about 4000 miles. On MK3 I got through 2 electronic speedos as well, both failed (one was sender). I since went back to mechanical speedo.

On my 750 I also got through 2 speedos (now original mechanical speedo) (still have electronic tacho on 750).

So, I got to say my review of smiths electronic instruments is not good.

I am looking for a mechanical tacho (NVT) if anyone has one for sale?
Also, if anyone needs a good smiths electronic speedo I have one (the sender unit failed, so speedo still good).

Hi Jerry, Sad to hear about your issues. I know how much you liked them in the beginning.
I think Greg Marsh has some nice Recon'd clocks.

Hello mate, hope all is well.
I found a good reconditioned original one and had the other parts, so it all worked out. Happy now.

Been riding the 850 quite a bit. It won second place at British conclave near Denver last week :)

Sorry to hear that your electronic gauges did not work out. I hope that I am not jinxing myself but mine have been working very nicely for over 5 years now with a lot of miles on them. The only problem was with the sensor cable to the drive box on the rear wheel but they have a better one now.
Your motorcycle looks very nice!

Hi Mike,

Yeah on mk3, for the speedo it was the sender. The type I had was hard to get, so I changed to original one a while back. So, I have a good electronic speedo in case anyone needs one. I am not sure exactly what happened to the electronic tacho. It might be repairable. I do know it was not wiring related. I had the electronic gauges on it since 2013, so they lasted quite a while.

I do love that bike. Overall its been highly reliable since I restored it.

I am heading down to Oklahoma, New Mexico on it Tuesday! I like Pan Am a lot!

Traveling with Jim and Ernie to Ok, then they east via TX and I am headed west to AZ

How did the tach act when it failed?

Yes thats it. It stopped. When turning ignition on it went all the way around and back like normal, but no reading. The wiring ok.
