You are not that far (maybe 10 miles or so, - Braintree to Gt. Dunmow) from FD Motorcycles?

You are right, but have you ever tried to get anything booked into them? They don't keep a Diary and the last time i called, they suggested I kept calling back to see how busy they were and then maybe take it in. I have bought spares from them but have used RGM more recently as they seem more helpful.

Anyway- an update.
Got the bike moved over to the clubs Norton guru in Rochford who has rewired the bike. The connections on the bike did not match the loom I bought, but this has been changed. The ignition was damaged so has been replaced. One of the plugs was working when it wanted to and was the wrong type(?) and the new carb-well I am told there was a flaw in the casting that was stopping the float from working smoothly and the choke, just for good measure, wasn't working.
So not a complete suprise I struggled with the thing.
RGM have been good on the 'phone and e-mail, and it was my error that the bike needes the electrics doing. MOT tomorrow and hopefully i'll ride it the 40 miles home!
Anyone see the Charlie Boorman thing on the telly? His co-traveller and producer had a 1975 mk3 in silver, shipped to Ireland in a van for the start of their trip ot Oz 'By any means' and the old girl wouldn't start! My family were laughing like drains as this has been my grief since i began Norton ownership. They jump started it using a lawnmower- the shame of it!
Don't know what next is going to go, but I be much more careful when i buy the next bike- which will be a single, don't know what yet but an ES2 or a BSA (Had an M21 and an Enfield 500 (that used to cut out when it wanted to). Would like the old 18H thing or maybe a CCM?

Mk 2 Amal

Hi - I have a Commando Interstate 920 with a single 36mm Mk2 Amal. It is fitted via a RGM manifold thus there is no 'flange' - the carb fits via a rubber/plastic tube held with jubilee clips - no bother and leak-free (they do tend to split/crack after a few years though). Other than initial fiddling with jets etc. it works well with easy starting and good running (a bit 'flat' at the top end compared to twin carbs though). I would recommend a metal 90 degree tube on the top of the carb to route the throttle cable correctly as it's a bit tight up there. I bought such a tube a few years ago at a jumble - it has a threaded end thus I tapped the plastic carb top such that the tube screws in. This works a treat with a nice throttle action.
P.S. my Mk2 is a genuine Amal unit - I agree that the new Burlen-made stuff is pretty rough.

AMAL MARK 2-speedo

Update

It works! rode it home and it runs well. The back brake wasn't working but that was just a bit of adjustment as I had fitted a new rubber gaiter to the pedal. I will get some miles on it to see how it fares but Trog in Rochford has done a great job.
The tacho repair was excellent, but makes the speedo look old. THe speedo has stopped working, but the mileometer is still notching up-any ideas out there as I thought at first it was a cable issue until I noticed the miles going up.
Thanks for all the ideas and I shall continue to read what is going on.

Mike
