Hi Chaps,
As part of the rehabilitation of my Mk3 I'm planning a change of ignition to a Pazon system with a single coil. On the face of it, a very common 3ohm Harley coil, 31614-83A, would seem to do the trick. Has anyone taken this route before?

Cheers, Jon

I'd check with Pazon on that, they're the experts on their own equipment.

That might be pushing the amps a bit high, depends how well cooled the box is. Pazon's is 4.2 ohm and I fitted a 5 ohm Dynatek to mine last year.

I realised that I have had a discussion with Pazon about this, with regard to a different Harley coil on a different bike. Here it is, for your delectation -

Hi Jon,

For most bikes there should be no problem going up to 5 ohms primary.
We know many who have done this with success.
If your meter gives a residual reading of 0.8 ohms, this indicates that your coil is 4.2 ohms, which should be fine.

With a higher coil primary resistance, the average coil current is lower.
Too high a resistance can give reduced spark energy.
This can have an effect on spark energy (and hence performance) in high revving and/or high compression engines.

So for competition or highly tuned engines, we would recommend going for a lower resistance coil (e.g. 3 ohms primary).

Best regards,
Andy

My Mk3 is neither high compression or high revving, but I'm going to give the Harley coil a go - I've just bought one for twenty quid.

Cheers!

I have just had the same discussion with Pazon re tha ALTAIR and they advised the use of a 3 ohn Dyna SEE BELOW.

Thanks for contacting us.

You can use a dual coil in the range 3 to 5 ohms, with both the Sure Fire and Altair systems.

You will normally get higher energy sparks with a 3 ohm coil.
The Altair is quite energy efficient (does not drive the coil hard), so a 3 ohm coil will be a good choice for this system.
Just make sure that the coil is mounted at both ends to a decent heatsink (ideally a sheet of aluminium).
This helps to draw heat away from the core of the coil.

Got rid of the Boyer couldn,t handle the single coil. Went to a pazon with my accel super coil and have had no problems. Contacted pazon and got the green light with the accel super coil. Your right leg and knee will love the pazon over the Boyer !!! NO KICK BACK !!! Jack

Had a Boyer on my mk-3 and a accel super coil. Boyer took a crap !! Went to a pazon with no problems and no kick back. Pazon factory gave the green light for the Accel coil. You,ll be happy with the pazon !! Jack

I haven't finished tidying up the wiring & fasteners in this picture but here's a picture of my coil in situ, mounted on a 2"x1" ali angle bracket. I've also mounted a pair of LED indicators on a U-shaped bracket.
Single coil for Commando with Pazon

Pazon arrived yesterday, I still have plenty to do before hopefully returning the bike to the road for its 40th birthday.

Cheers, Jon
