I'm changing headlights & trying to clean up the rats nest in the shell. Just so you know it's a 1973 850. And I have mounted a set of aftermarket mini turn siginals, bike is still Positive ground & runs a Boyer... 1st dumb Question. Are the Speedo & Tach lights suposed to be ON all the time the key is in the "run" position??? Or are they supossed to come on when the headlight is switched on? Thanks. One question at a time.

Thanks Antriman, that's what I thought & how I think mine used to be before I switched headlight shells. I don't think I changed any wires but now my Speedo, Tach lights come one with the key. They stay on with my headlight which seems to be working normaly. I really need to re-wire the whole bike.
Did a little checking with the wiring diagram ( should have trusted it 1st) and from what I can see the 1972 & onward bikes do not have those lights going to the headlight switch, they come on with the tail light when the master switch is in the # 3 (by the drawing) position. I was chasing a problem that didn't exist. Now on to why my turn signals won't work right. I should rewire the whole bike.

Has the original wiring been hacked up and pieced back together? Or is it just that the wires have been plugged into the block connector in random fashion?
If it is the latter just throw away the block connector and make up your own, sorting out the connections as you go.
