A couple of fresh questions as my restoration moves ahead slowly.

Can anyone tell me if the following pictures of my sidestand is a genuine Norton one or some other make? Before I stripped the bike when the sidestand was retracted it disappeared completely under the frame. Seems something odd about it to me.

On another subject. When I removed the front fork tubes from the steering head and removed the top cap bolts I noticed that the internal springs were not one single spring but a longer spring and a shorter one on top about 4" or 5" long. The parts books only show a single spring in each fork leg. Can anyone tell me what is going on with the springs and whether this is standard or not please?

Thanks

Don

Probably genuine, although the prong is missing.

If it misses the frame then the stand bracket or pivot could be worn, bent or twisted and the missing rubber stop buffer doesn't help.

It isn't standard.

It's possible somebody has fitted the 'Fauth' fork modification kit?

The first version of frame mounted side stand didn't have that large tang part sticking out, so I think that's what you have. Although mine doesn't have the boss for the rubber stop, which yours seems to have. Mine can disappear under the frame tube so I made a bolt on stop using a U bolt exhaust clamp with a central bolt for the stand to rest against with a piece of rubber tube over it.

Thanks guys for the comments. All valuable.

Does this look like standard bracket for sidestand on '74 Commando (mine). Thanks.

Thanks Les,

Good to know I am starting from a known good base seeing as I am unfamiliar with the Norton.

Cheers

Yes, it looks like the standard bracket.

commando bracket types:
first type 68,68,70

71 one year only (often upgraded to latest type)

third type for 72 thru 75 The early side stands of this variety, like 72, did not originally have the skinny extension.

Yes, but this is a '74 850.

As far as I'm aware, the earlier '71-'72 version stand also had no buffer lug which suggests the prong has been removed from this one. I think the idea behind the addition of the prong and the buffer was so the stand would retract further and so stop it dragging as easily.
