Greeting to all. I am a newbe but not a newbe to this site. I've gotten to know most of you by your knowledge and helpful advice.
I have three Nortons 2 - 750s and one Slimline featherbed that in process. Thinking about a Harton. Anyone have any experience stuffing a
Ironhead Harley into a Slimline? I have not purchased a motor and our friend Evan Wilcox has suggested some very early motors such as flatheads
due to the possible rear barrel interfearance with the top frame hoops. A buell engine is what I would like to stuff in her but I hate to spend the money only to find
that the frame has to be cut. I'm open for suggestions or comments.

Back to my original reason for posting. I have a beautiful 750 roadster. Evan Wilcox fabricated the tank, seat and side covers. This guy is an artist! The bike was lowered
1.75 inches. I used an 850 frame but retained the 750 engine cradle so I have no center stand. I modified the sidstand by heating the end and bending it up so it will sit with a proper lean during park. My problem come in attacting the sidestand spring. The frame I am using had no hoe in the cross tube so I checked the frame on the other 750 and drilled the hole. It was just right of center. There was no way to get that spring to go on. With the help of an Elephant we managed to distort the frame mounting portion of the spring to where it started to uncurl. I drilled a hole just left of center. This was better and I made both connections. I then tried to rotate the sidestand and PING! no spring to be found. I'm in Tennessee and I think it may be somewhere in Georgia.
Any suggestions? Did I ruin the spring on the first early attempt? Or am I doing something wrong?

I vote for stuffing a Knuckle motor in there!

How did you mount your Wilcox seat? I had one made a while back and the mounting method he suggested seems kinda rinky dink to me. Also, your post is worthless without pics of your 850/750 hybrid with the Wilcox tins.

How on earth was that lump squeezed into a 'garden-Gate' ?

I'm not sure about the sidestand spring. It's generally the easier of the springs to fit. I connect it up and then lever the pivot bolt through. Right hand side of the cross-tube is correct but the lack of an existing hole is a puzzle unless it had elongated and been welded up. I've never seen an 850 frame without one.

He retained the 750 cradle but I've never owned a 750 so I can't comment about the hole for a spring.

Presumably, the stand assembly and spring are the type that goes with the 850 frame? The cradle doesn't play any part in that, as 79x100 pointed out, the locating hole for the spring should be in the frame cross-member which was the same for all models (750 & 850) from '72-on I believe?

Hey, you're right! I was thinking centre stand spring.

Hi Chuck, I saw this last year.
Not as interesting as Coco's picture though.

As far as I know, the side stand spring fits like this, with the smaller cranked hook at the lower end?
Edit: The spring fits the opposite way to how it's shown.

Oh man. This reminds me I'd better look for my spring hole as I think the guy that ruined my powder coat job may have gone over it.

Whatever....it's still cool. If it were mine I would have slapped an Iron head sporty motor in there or a K model lump.

Although, the more I look a it, the more I seem to think that the spring is supposed to fit the other way around, even though the diagram in my (MkIII) parts book appears to show the spring with its longest leg and smaller hook at the lower end, I don't think that is conclusive proof, so I've tried it with the spring turned around, although it doesn't really seem to make much difference either way?

I believe you are right it is reversed. At least all three of mine are the other way round because the way it is in the picture it will scrape the crossmember , but if you reverse it it will not and it is much easier to hook the long curved end into the tab than the hole in the frame.

I also believe this is Chuck's problem. The more curled end of the spring should go in the tab on the sidestand. That's the end that moves so needs the curl. The frame end only rotates about the spring wire. Attached this way with the spring fully in the hole in the frame, it should not come free.

Here are some shots of the 750. Before and after. I have installed a front fender from CNW and finished up a few details since these photos.

Thanks for the advice on the spring. I think the spring was crap as after I found it I can twist and distort the thing with little effort. A lot of the parts offered out there are just cheap Chinese junk.

What is this aluminum fuel tank? This is something I will need for my pending cafe-project.

That's the exact same tank and seat I got from Wilcox as well.

Thanks to all with the support on the sidestand spring issue. I recenty got a replacement from a Norton supply company. The spring is now stainless but is vastly different from the last one purchased for the same application from the same company. Almost double the diameter and much longer. Most strange. Fit like a champ and works like God intended it to. Can finally take the bike off of the construction table and put the snow tire on for the winter.

I'll keep you posted on the Featherbed project. Thinking that the Triumph powerplant option might be the the way to go to avoid reinventing the wheel.

I dunno Graeme, an XR motor is something pretty damn special and not something I've seen before. That thing would be an animal.

I agree, An XR750 Powerplant would probably fit, but so rare, so expensive, so troublesome for a blast around town machine. I've always wanted and XR. Had a few opportunities in the past for a price that is now a steal. I believe that when the time is right, the right powerplant will come by. Hate to settle on a Briggs 5 HP though out of my lawn mower if it does not.

Seen a couple of Norvins in the flesh maybe 10 years back now that is a lovely combination.

Heres a link for one I found with Google
