Does anyone know is the side stand is forged steel or cast iron, as the 'rats tail' on the end (the bit you use to flick it out has broken off mine and needs to be re-welded.
thanks
Tom

Steel , theres a way to tell , somehow .

Taitanium'd be half the weight , on a big ugly thing like that .

IRON would be GREY at a break , crystaly . Steel shinier silver .

Prep the joint .

Forged steel. NOT CAST.
Welds like any other low carbon steel. I built mine up (TIG) where it was worn at the joint.

Forging dies are expensive, much more likely to be malleable cast iron. This is processed using extended heat treatment to drive out the carbon leaving the iron with carbon levels like that of steel and having the physical properties of steel including welding like steel. Very common on Brit bikes.

If welding it on the bike , I would be sure to disconnect any battery electrical including ignition if it is electronic

I fixed mine by grinding the tip flat and drill & tapping for a nickel threaded stud.

Certainly wish more people would... the number of blown Alternators & batteries vie seen over the years on HGV's.... but the principle is the same

It welds easily with either MIG or TIG. It looks like a cast part rather than forged. Maybe cast steel?

"It looks like a cast part rather than forged."

Please explain further your observations.
