anyone have a pic of what a good or new sidestand lug looks like? Mine is like a V rounded out in the middle, but it seems like there is nothing to stop the sidestand. Too scared to try it out.

Depends on the year of the frame. Side stands changed - which type are you looking for?

is 75, but hobots pic looks like mine.

so what keeps it from just swinging round the front??
You'd think there would be some kind of stop

Not much Mate, just the corners of the lug and the kick lever meeting at their weakest vertices. I had Peels welded up leaving a crude blunter bead blob to grind back a bit till stand stopped where it should. Unless changing to other bike brand its another innate wear piece like tires and speedo drive to keep after. Its one last Norton item I want to eliminate on Ms Peel, not sure how yet.

This is today's shot on pure Combat Trixie a late summer '72 factory issue, un-molested so far but getting rounded in warning of what's to come soon enough.

thanks guys. mine is like hobots where it swings a little past the edge. Maybe I can weld and grind to the sidestand to make it stop where dave's does in the vid

I have done my repair two different ways on two different commandos. I've put a built up bead of weld on the side stand it's self after eye leveled the edge. And the other repair was to the lug with a built up edge. Ground off just enough to have a stop on the front edge of it. The welded edges on both repairs are harder than the stock material the factory used.

Hi Dave, just saw your video; the bolt should be upside down, you will find out why after you mounted the spring :!:

On my '69 S the small ground footprint of the side stand was the only thing I really disliked. It would fall over in any soft dirt for example. Had to sometimes carry a block of wood to park in dirt. The big, long arm of my '79 Bonneville side stand was what I considered to be the cat's meow. Has anyone put such a long ground-contact stand on a Commando?

Use the center stand, toss that piece of iron onto the scrap pile.

It's heavy, it drags on the ground, it doesn't work well, and it pushes the head pipe out so far that it drags on the ground.

Besides you shouldn't use it, when you do, the bike is tilted over such that transmission oil drains down the clutch pushrod tube and into your clutch.

Nomore-backslider, almost convinced me with his practical points, to remove that weak frame wart side stand drag, but only level places here have a roof over it so not always possible to park on center stand when no trees/walls handy. If ya lever on the side stand with bike on tires or center stand, you can see it twist frame and itself some. Frame tubes are not much more than match book cover thick.
There ain't not real good fix, its innately going to place max stress on both bolt bore leverage and the tiny corner edge stop. Careful handling and parking and kick start on side stand tend to preserve for few seasons. In most case center stand is all ya need, unless so loaded can lever it up by yourself.

On Trixie [photo example] I'm sticking with the good book fully expecting to just order parts time to time and be done with it. On Peel, will have to re-think side and center stand. Maybe a clip on/off sturt that hooks on at good angle and hard spot. Bike height makes a lot of difference on angle and leverage on stand.
On Peel with just the 2" extra fork stance unloaded, I had to add 2" long bolt extension or she laid over too darn far.

Oh yeah, I agree center stand is better. Posted originally though because I can't get the bike on the centerstand by myself. I changed the bushings a few days ago so may be better now, but I have to get a 2nd person around to try it out.
