I'm looking for a pair of Interstate side panels for my Mk2.

Aside from a 2nd hand set coming up on here, NOC or eBay etc. my options are as follows..

£190 + vat plastic, unpainted, no L/H tool tray...

£124 + vat - steel, unpainted, with L/H tool tray...

£72 inc vat, steel, unpainted with L/H tool tray (manufactured by Tinku Madbull - India)...

Various Indian sellers on eBay and hope they fit...

Or... paint & modify/adapt the Mk2A tatty steel originals I bought last year...

Side panel options for Mk2.

I suppose I'd prefer steel over fibreglass, but it doesn't really matter as long as they fit properly & look good.

Anyone have any experience with the above options?

I wouldn’t worry about the tool tray. I cut it out of mine in order to make space for my revised battery layout etc.

But I also thought that putting heavy tools in there would be far more likely to cause issues with the panel coming adrift etc.

I would avoid unbranded from *ndia personally, just too unpredictable.

I think any new ones will required you to add a bracket to the LHS and generally finesse to fit. So, in your shoes, I’d try the ones I had first.

I have the tool tray/insert in my roadster L/H panel and find it great for carrying a few cable ties & light tools as I don't have the under seat tray - though I suppose I could look into that. My battery is longways in so I have a bit of room there.

Agree. Not from experience, but from info gleaned on here.

The Mk2A oil tank cover will have slightly more cut-out at the front for the 'A' plastic airbox but should otherwise fit without
modification.

The 2A battery cover probably has no lower rear grommet position but should otherwise fit so it would need adapting to add the second grommet location (or something else?).

The Indian ones are strangely consistent, the holes are in the wrong position but always the same way. They look to be made on tooling so shapewise they are ok but the holes will need work.

I bought a set of the RGM steel ones for my Interstate about 5 years ago. They both had good shape but both needed fettling to fit properly before I had them painted.

The right hand side needed the holes opened up a little for the screws to go through and attached to the oil tank. The front edge at the top needed a mm or two taken off to clear the frame tube. An easy 10 minutes work with a file.

The left sided needed more work to bend and get the attachment strap at the front to fit nicely with the side panel parallel to the z plate. The back two holes with grommets also needed filing and twisting. A fair bit of work to get them fitted nicely.

So I can recomend the shape but definitely check and fettle carefully before you paint them.

In the end I got them good enough to get 3 Rd place British bike at a local show. However you can still see from the photos that while the right one is good the left one is still not really correct after a considerable amount of messing about.

Bonzo,
I have 2 sets of fiberglass Interstate covers from India that work but I would stay away from them. I also have a brand new left side(AN fiberglass)but finally found a set of factory steel covers that fit perfectly. I use the left cover tool slot also. These covers took me a long time to find but I am now a happy camper. The cover from AN also fit well

Looks really good John 👍

Just offering up the original Mk2A panels for an idea of fit...

Side panel options for Mk2.

The tank cover (with cut out for Mk2A black box air filter as noted by Les) just makes contact with the ham can filter bracket bolt...

Side panel options for Mk2.

And having no dzus fastener bracket behind the lower battery cover means a zip tie may have to be substituted...

RGM do the bracket for the Roadster to add Dzus, someone must do the Interstate version.

And RGM do the Interstate as well but do not have Dzus in the description

Here's where I up to with offering the Interstate parts up...

Some tank position tweeks to do, along with giving it a good wash out, but looking promising.

...like shortening the timing side rear tank mounting stud that currently sits on the oil tank bracket

They look good. The left one is fitted better than mine. I think I would go with those.

RGM fibreglass.

Probably mistaken but I think the MK2 and MK2A use different oil tank covers and maybe the MK2A and MK3 use the same oil tank covers. I'm hesitating right now because a have a good set from MK2A that I was planning to send as patterns to have US made Fiberglas made. The Roadster ones I've had made are quite good. Any info in the subject is appreciated!

Does it need shortening....or more cushioning in the rear....do you have good absorption padding to take some weight off the front mounts...?
