Another take on the slots.
Side cover over oil tank
I saw it for sale on the KIJIJI site

Ha ha.... did you cut a slot in the rear of the cover.....
No, didnt see a need, it was really done for looks, took me long enough to shape the front ones! I also went through the oil cooler route but decided, in the uk, there really was no need.

Olympus,
From your other posts, you apparently have a pre-'71 frame with a '72 title. If you have the oil tank to match the frame (central mount or fastback style) you will need side covers from a '69-'70 'S' or Roadster or no cover if it is a fastback tank. If your battery tray/oil tank is from a '71 or later, then the side panels in the pictures posted previously will fit.

I left the cover off my 850 for a while after the cover retaining threads stripped , I would not recommend it , that tank can get bloody hot .

"in the early 1970's it was considered prudent to cut a couple inch slots in the front and back of the right side cover to enhance cooling
no idea if it did any good but it looked cool and sort of made sense"

This side cover was on my '71 Roadster when I bought it some 15 years ago. (Sorry for mediocre picture quality. This was back in the days before I got a digital camera.) The cover looked a little too good to be something bodged up in someones garage and I always wondered if it was some kind of aftermarket goodie.
