Since 1985 I have struggled (fought) the LH exhaust pipe and the drain plug on the primary cover. Usually I try to shift it here and there minutely or if nothing works pull off the pipe and dimple it with a ball peen hammer. Yesterday I was in the middle of the task and then took a disc grinder to the offending drain plug and it's aluminum boss. It's easy to do, solves the problem. I never use the drain anyway and it requires removing the pipe to do so.

I had the same problem until I found a complete MKIII with bean cans and install them...no issue...I think a “regular“ 850 Exhaust tucks in closer

Although I have pea shooters my pipes are for a MKIII and have no clearance issues with the primary drain. Just used it yesterday as a matter of fact changing gasket.
 
I bought a set of balanced pipes from Armors ten years ago and have no issues at all with access....
 
Of course the original MKIII pipes were the flared end type that sit on a cone insert in the port. Unfortunately ...some..."aftermarket" pipes also have flared ends and are totally unsuitable for MKIII.... typically they are cheap unbalanced for 750 and regular 850. If you find a maker of flared end pipes that "actually " fit a MKIII you are quite lucky and fortunate and should tell us all.
I bought a set of BCS sourced British made-flared-balanced-MKIII pipes for a customer and they fit and cleared the primary nut just fine. Quite a few yearsa ago...
Since then I bought (cheap) 2 used MKIII pipes sets off EBAY for further MKIII projects.
 
So only ORIGINAL MK3 pipes were made to clear the drain plug. And most people changing the pipes should run into the problem I have had on every MK3 I've ever worked on. The chance of original pipes being found would be a near miracle. I am using a set of 72 pipes because the aftermarket mk3 pipes had a bad flange and wouldn't allow proper tightening.

Mk3 pipes are flared, not "flanged" for assembly with spherical seatings and collets (but no sealing washers).

How does that happen?
I meant flared. The existing pipe had been held together by the crossover. The owner is not very attentive and when the nut loosened the pipe destroyed half the threads in the head and also beat up the flare in the process. It would not hold the collets very well. So, short of buying new pipes or spending a few hours trying to make the flare work, I substituted a pair of 72 pipes hoping to give the last remaining threads the best chance.
 
I recently reported on here a failure of my left headpipe while riding. It fell apart and I wired it on to get home.
After an intense search for a proper replacement, I found a pair of unbalanced pipes for Mk3 at Feked over in the UK.
They fit perfectly in all ways from flare to clearances. Not a bad price and delivery in less than 2 weeks.
Plus I love the sound of the individual pipes through my Decibels. I ride now more than ever just to listen to the purr (roar).

When I bought my pipes about 3 decades ago I couldn't find balanced but did find unbalanced made for MKIII, so they've been there ever since. I'd like to replace them as they're quite discolored but I've got too many irons in the fire.
 
I've never had issues with my Interstate, nor with the monoshock Dreer prototype bike (850 MkIII engine)
 
The stock header pipes dragged all the time, so I changed them. Yes, there is an unsightly dent in the head pipe Which I had to make. These days, I don't ride so hard, but the kink at the rear of the originals were pretty well flattened in the 70s
