got a norton serial number is 141700, matching on frame and engine, original paint was metal flake blue. cant figure out what model it is. according to what ive found its first one that year, looks like a s model. but dosent work with them serial numbers. any help please thanks max

Officially, it's too late to be a 750 S type (however, the official numbers are not always 100% correct) but it was more likely to have been a Roadster.

According to Roy Bacon, 141717 was a Fastback (last Fastback MkII)

You could try contacting the VMCC library service as they hold the surviving Norton factory records for that period.

The serial number will not tell you which model it left the factory as but it will tell you the year, you then have to match the features on your bike to see which model it matches closest from that model year.

131257 1970 II 750 Fastback S-Type Roadster

141783 1971 III 750 Fastback Roadster SS HiRider Fastback Long Range (Steel Tank)

So 141700 would be a late MK2 750 70 model year and would be a Fastback, S Type or a Roadster.

141700 is quoted on many lists as the first 1971 model. If the side stand lug is mounted inboard of the frame tube and the center stand mounts to the engine cradle and not the frame, it is a 1971 model. 1971 models came as Roadsters, Hi-Riders, and Fastbacks, although the Fastback used the same battery tray and oil tank as the Roadster/Hi Rider. Previous Fastback models used battery trays and oil tanks specific to the Fastback.

The only differences in 1971 models are fuel tanks, seats, sidecovers and handlebars.

Kommando, I can't agree with the 131257 being a '70. I have 131633 and it is a '69 S. ( late April ?) I think Dog T has a list of "S" VIN'S

Yes, but the info I have, mostly from Roy Bacon, lists 131257, Mar 69, as the first 'S' and it includes the camshaft points. I'm not sure what you mean by "Fastback S-type Roadster". The fastback (first Commando) had a side panel oil tank and any S and 70 Roadster would have a central type oil tank. Mine is 132031, Apr 69 and I am confident it's correct and an original 'S'.

The last 'S' is supposedly 135088, Jun 70, not that others haven't been adapted in the meantime.

By 141783, Jan 71, that would be the first Fastback MK III, with the upswept pipes I think.

So, 141700 would most likely be a Fastback MK II, not sure what the difference there is, perhaps the straight back silencers and somewhat different oil tank?

kommando appears to be quoting the Norvil website info which, unfortunately, is so incomplete that the information it contains is not totally reliable in fact it can be misleading.

Body type was indicated on the 1971 production factory records. I have a couple of photo copies of pages from the factory records in the range of 151xxx that Neville sent me while working on the NOC Factory Records Project. Shows color and body style. Do as LAB suggests, check with the VMCC or the NOC.

thanks for all the info, it has a fiberglass tank, both stands mounted to frame, has halo around headlight. any good ideas on parts like rims, fenders, carb.

Interesting, if centerstand is mounted to the frame, that indicates pre-'71 and if the headlight ring is original, then that is '69-'70 as well. Shows how unreliable the serial number lists are. Could be a '70 Roadster.

YES .

Send them to ME . 8)

All are available , but oriuginal Dunlop Rims you wouldnd dicard unless theyve been bombed , or in the North Sea , etc . Though ,

fancy Alloy Rims , ' fenders ' ( Guards ) are LIGHTER , and ' some people ' wernt entirely impressed with the ' original ' carbs ( or Mikunis )

There are one or two threads on the like , to be sure . The latter Mk II Amal concentrics wernt quite as attrocious . :P

Wouldnt sneeze at a set of these here MAGNESIUM ones though , If in good order .
