separating exhaust pipe from muffler?

anybody have any tips to separate the 2? they seem to be fused together w/corrosion. i've heated them up, banged the pipe as that's what i'm replacing. they're stuck solid. muffler is aftermarket megaphone and has a split to facilitate starting the pipe into it. going out now to buy some of that freezing spray. heard it works but i've yet to use it. as always , thanks in advance, rick

Using a twisting motion will brake the rust bond the fastest.

If you are just trying to save the headpipe, cut through the muffler sleeve that passes over the headpipe with lengthwise cuts. Use a cut-off wheel and be careful trying not to cut into the head pipe. Make four cuts 90 degrees apart. Chisel (air chisel works best) to peel the muffler from the pipe.

It usually isn't worth all the work to save the headpipes.

I'm trying to save the silencer. The pipes are shot. Before I spring for new silencers I will cut the pipe off where it meets the silencer and try to chisel out the pipe stub from the silencer maybe try the local muffler shop too.

Sometimes the headpipes go waaaaayyyyyy into the muffler. Try soaking the joint in Aerokroil or other good penetrating oil (not WD-40 !) overnight or longer. Make a fixture to bolt the muffler to in a vise and then twist and pull on the headpipe.

+1 What he said.

Penetrating oil, try a fit a wide screwdriver blade into the splits on the muffler to prise it open a bit, let the oil soak in, then try to remove with a twisting motion.

i hacked the pipe off about 2 inches from where it enters the muffler. then i put the end on the floor and tapped the pipe about a 1/4" down into the muffler. put a clamp on the stub and tapped it back as far as i could. took about 5 repetitions of the above before i was able to wiggle it out. thanx for all the suddestions, rick
