Seeking factory correct black and gold 850 Roadster paint work. Not over restored. No clearcoat(from the factory,as far as I know) , using correct hand pinstriping with the correct gold color. Also with correct gold and black lined fuel tank decals. Is there any restorers in the states that can achieve that? Sorry about the wax build up on the edge of the original sticker;)View attachment 3305

My original paint 1974 Roadster tank has gold only stickers as does my original (I think) 1972 Roadster tank.

Hi Jimbo,

You are not supposed to be able to do Polls. I will have to fix that. I will leave it for now.

BTW- I vouch for Brent's work.

Cheers

Good job!

I believe that explains it , the gold with black surround decals were in fact factory original, didn't hold up and were replaced because of a customer's request or by the dealers discretion . That is why there are owners of original bikes that have the solid gold stickers on black, they were replacements applied by dealers before the bikes were bought, the new owners unaware.

sorry they don't seem to have the correct ones, the only gold and black trim stickers they list have a different font made for the earlier bikes.
His contact details are on his front page. Drop him a line as he says "Please feel free to email me ( Jim ) with any enquiries. I will help out wherever possible."

Well we all know the factory tended to use what they had on hand and some supplies lasted longer than others. Thusly many leftover components found a home on later models and the exact cut-off date VIN-wise for some things isn't the same as that for others. You can do that when you produce the same machine for 10 years and have a lot of interchangeable parts.

Seems perfectly possible to have two correct restorations with consecutive VINs in the same model year and still have some things different from one machine to the other.

Previous discussion about the outlined stickers can be reviewed here: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/40-year-old-tank.14978/

For example of a Roadster tank and sidecover in metalflake blue with outlined stickers, see the 1973 sales brochure cover: http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Brochures/1970/1973NortonLineUp.pdf

Early 850 Roadster tanks in red had a version of silver with the black outline. Not sure if the early 850 red Roadster sidecovers also had the outline, as at least some of the blue ones did.

However, as jimbo pointed out, the '73 tank decal is a slightly different font to the pre-'73 062021 "gold with black edge" decal, so the early '73 "gold" (062931) decal (which probably is gold with a black edge) is unlikely to have been a leftover but only lasted for a few months before being replaced by the better quality 064880 item as mentioned in the service release.

AN also think the '73 062931 decal is "gold with black edge" although the decal shown is the pre-'73 062021 design with 'stencil' style 'O's.

most of the photobucket photos in that thread are broke, but I captured Art's photo before it broke( don't know how that happened!) the sticker is just like mine
here it is. Remember we are talking about early black 850's

Just trying to help you out as the title of your poll implies you had some doubt about the originality of your stickers, as do some of the votes.

And note there are two r's in the correct spelling of "surround."

.

It just might be, the edge appears to be black, but the black paint might be showing through the clear. I just sold another black Roadster with the exact same paint work, so two alike makes a consensus ? And I swear I saw a original black roadster at Barbers at Turn Six, this year with the same treatment , anyone know about that one?

Under close examination , my early black Roadster's gold "Norton" tank stickers have thin black surrounds not clear as I was wondering . Sorry about my spelling , I got a brain problem that way:confused:

Heres another example of black surround gold stickers

Hi, I have found a set of vintage NOS 06-2931 stickers and they are not same as the original ones shown on the original bikes in this thread. Oh well .

The black surround does not extend as far as the stickers shown on the tanks.

I will keep looking for more examples and information concerning the sticky sticker history .

The one piece black bordered decals are available at Diablo cycles http://www.diablocycle.com/-Norton/through their Reproduction decals section. Have ordered Honda decals from them before and they will break up a set if you just need the tank decals. This is my 72 original tank. Looks to be the same as on Art’s bike. The black line is thicker especially on the right side of the script to give it that shaded look. https://pin.it/afmwa64g7el2ut

That Diablo #NOR-720750G looks to be a very good match for the original ones used until they went to solid gold on the black bikes only.
So apparently there are correct reproductions available. good find.:)
See the photo for two original bikes and the Diablo sticker for comparison.

Has anyone sourced gold paint for the pinstriping that is reasonably matched to the sticker gold? My first try served to show how much variation in 'gold' there can be......
