Zig,
I can get you a pic of the bottom of the base, would that help? Don't want to take the top off though. Does this help?

WOw you bet thank you question ! There a buffers on the brackets that got to the shocks are they plastic covered steel? Ziggy

Hey Dave are there any additional buffers on your seat pan maybe under the seat covering on the pan? Is this the pan off your S that sucker is really pristine! Is it a factory seat or a repop? Thanks Ziggy

Ziggy,
Under the seat cover and foam is only steel. It looks good from the picture side, under the foam is quite pitted. I had it blasted and powder coated, used original foam and new seat cover from Walridge. You can see part of my old seat cover in the corner of the picture. New foam can be purchased very reasonably and cut to fit which I intend to do. If you see the foam it's made of lots of small pieces of foam glued together, I forget what it's called, but it's available.

There are 6 original rubber bumpers that I have attach into the original holes in the seat pan, I used some silicone to hold them in place. The red arrows show the 6 bumpers. The blue arrow shows the dimple, left over from I don't know what.

The seat side still contacted the side panel, so I installed some rubber tubing on the frame to hold it up roughly in position to contact the bumpers in the bottom of the seat.

PM me if you need help, I think RK Leighton has all the parts, don't get a F/G pan, get a steel one if you need one. Notice the 69/70 seat was also the same height throughout the length of the seat (about 3 1/2"), not raised in the rear like the later ones (71 up).

Hi Dave I have the indentical so I know its Factory the bumpers on mine are plastic coated steel 4 of them when viewed from the top the shank of the rivit is split into 4 parts holding it in place . there were also additional rubber push in type sound rite? Ziggy

Hi Dave another question when your seat is mounted on the bike is therea gap between the fender & the bottom of the seat? Thanks Ziggy

The 2 bumpers on the curved section hit the rear mudguard and hold the seat proper from hitting the mudguard. My bumpers were rubber with a small tapered center section that pushed through the hole. Far as I know they were original. I think they are available, item 33 NM21852 here http://www.oldbritts.com/1971_g21.html

The seat is quite flexible and can be bent to shape quite easily, and also bent from weight.

I used some left over 3/8" oil line cut in small pieces. Glued it on with silicone.

Hey Dave looking at the pictures you posted are you using velcrow for batt. hold down straps? Ziggy

Yeah, it's actually the Velcro that is used for cable ties, comes in a roll, just roll out what you want and cut it off.

Yep thought so ! By the looks of things you have found lots of stuff to improve on .The factory set up is pretty Mickey Mouse. This is my first Norton these early Commando's need lots of stuff done to them so their more owner friendly got mine 3yrs ago as a rolling basket & I'm still sorting things out. Regards Ziggy

The mounting brackets on my 1970 seem to be heavy gauge steel painted black. My reproduction seat from Walridge has 0.081 brackets welded 4 places to the seat base but I am sure that you could use two threaded fasteners eg: 10-32 for each bracket. It depends on the gauge of the seat base. (May have to use through nuts, bolts and large heavy washers.)

Threads nearly 11 years old…
